My name is Madeline Sanborn and I love many things, including dancing, singing, laughing, and history. Unlike the rest of my generation, I deeply care about history. I've always been fascinated with what life was like before the modern times, and how people went from hunting with spears to popping popcorn in a microwave. The humans before us lived completely different lives than we do, possibly even more interesting lives, too. There used to be knights that would go into battle in full armor and on horseback, as well as jesters and mimes that would put on a circus in town square. Sure, not every part of the past was wonderful (*ahem* Britain), but each hardship our ancestors had to overcome was one step closer to being where we are today, and people take that for granted every day. That's why every day I try to teach people about history as much as I can (without being a bother). I even took on the sport of metal detecting with my dad. That's right. While other kids my age are indoors looking at their phones, I'm out at the beach swinging my metal detector, looking for pieces of history. A lot of Californians buy metal detectors in hopes of finding gold, but my hopes are set high for old coins, soldier belt-buckles, soldier uniform buttons, shoe-buckles, cannonballs, musketballs, and much more. My greatest find so far is an American 1906 Indian-Head penny. I hope to find more treasures of the past someday, but for now I'll keep searching and learning.
