This unit focuses on the effort to break the sound barrier and fly at supersonic speeds. This was a goal both for military aviation as well as commercial flight--the Concorde commercial airliner famously flew routes between New York and London in less than 3 hours, traveling at twice the speed of sound or Mach 2. A second development in this era focused on rocketry and the Space Race, thus the second component of this unit will look at NASA and spaceflight.
Required texts for this unit are Crouch, Wings, chapters 13, 14, and 15, and the article by Mai'a K.
