Williams was once known for its vibrant and plentiful neon signs. Now signs such as the Turquoise Tepee, Sultana and Canyon Club are likely the oldest and are amongst the few remaining examples within the Williams Historic Business District. These signs also continue to do their intended work as advertisements for the historic Route 66 businesses that are still operating within the buildings. The owners of the signs have tried hard to maintain them, however neon gas is pricy and there are few remaining technicians who have the skills to work on these types of historic signs. To help preserve the signs, the Williams Alliance for the Arts (WAFTA) worked with the sign owners to apply for grant funds through the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona to hire a contractor to complete an assessment of the signs. The purpose of the assessment was to determine the current status of the signs and develop a maintenance and restoration plan for each sign. WAFTA was awarded the Grant in May of 2025 and contracted with the Noaz Sign Company located in Flagstaff, AZ. Noaz completed the physical examination and submitted a written assessment and restoration plan for each sign in August of 2025. As of October 2025, two grant applications have been submitted. For the Turquoise Tepee an application was submitted to the National Trust of Historic Preservation for the Preserve Route 66 Grant. For the Canyon Club and Sultana signs and an application was submitted for a Cost Share Grant through the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. Hopefully there will be news of the results of the grant applications by January of 2026.
This sign is located at E Route 66 and is owned by Lea Bowden. The sign advertises a Indian Curio Business that was started by Lea's parents and was originally located within the bottom floor of the Grand Canyon Hotel in the same locations as the Williams Gallery today. The Indian Jewelry sign located below the Tepee advertised the business when it was located at the hotel and it was moved to this location in the 1960s and presumable the Tepee was added at that time.
Canyon Club sign is attached to the top of a building located at 124 E Historic Route 66. The building dates the the 1930s, but the exterior was remodeled in the 1950s. The Canyon Club sign is not the only sign on the building that needs attention, but it is the only neon sign. Work on this sign was therefore prioritized. The Canyon Club currently operates as a bar and appears to have once also included a restaurant the served Mexican Food.
This sign is on a building located at building located at 309 E Route 66. The building was constructed in 1912 and the Sultan Bar has been in continuous business since.
This version of the sign can be seen in photos dating to the 1950s. The cocktail label and the box with the "World Famous Sultana Bar" vinyl sign was added later, possibly as early as the early 1960s
