Some places are more than architecture. They are keepers of memory, quiet witnesses to the lives and moments that unfolded within them. Holmesdale is one of those rare places. Before exploring the rooms, grounds, and stories of Holmesdale, we invite you to discover the history of stewardships that has shaped this extraordinary estate.
Built in 1847 Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. created a summer retreat in the Berkshires, a region that has long inspired writers, artists, and thinkers seeking beauty and renewal. The estate stands on land inherited form his grandfather connected to the Holmes family legacy. Holmesdale was made possible through a remarkable act of devotion, love and generosity. The estate itself was constructed with funds inherited by Mrs. Amelia Lee Jackson Holmes, who received $2,000 in 1847 and together with her husband, used the inheritance to create a place of refuge, inspiration, and family gathering amid the beauty of the Berkshires. From its earliest days, Holmesdale was more than a residence it was a testament to the belief that a home can become a sanctuary for creativity, reflection, and generations of cherished memories.
Generations earlier, Colonel Jacob Wendell, Holmes's grandfather, acquired approximately twenty-four thousand acres known as Pontoosuck. Later, it became known as Pontoosuck Plantation before becoming part of the town of Pittsfield. Portions of this historic landscape would later be known as Canoe Meadows, a cherished natural preserve that continues to protect the beauty, open fields, and pastoral character of the land that has shaped this region for centuries.
Among those who found inspiration and respite here in his early years was Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., who later became one of the most influential Associate Justices of the United States Supreme Court. Here, he spent seven blessed summers surrounded by these grounds. Since its creation.
For nearly 200 years Holmesdale has been entrusted to only a small number of devoted stewards. Following the Holmes family, the estate was acquired in 1872 by John A. Gernochan, who gave it the enduring name Holmesdale. In the early twentieth century, Gernochan’s widow and her second husband, William Pollock, became the owner.
Continuing its legacy. In 1949, Holmesdale was acquired by Zenas Crane Colt, a member of the renowned Crane family, whose legacy in American paper making helped shape the industrial history of the Berkshires and the nation. Under his stewardship, Holmesdale remained among the region’s distinguished historic country estates.
In the mid-twentieth century, Holmesdale became part of Miss Hall's School, serving as the campus for the school's basketball program during the 1960s, adding a unique chapter to its story, In 1978, Holmesdale began a distinguished new chapter under the care of the Stein family, whose devotion to the estate reflected a deep appreciation for its history, craftsmanship, and timeless character.
The summer of 2016, was when we became the next steward of this extraordinary home. For the past ten years, Holmesdale has been far more than a residence. It has been a place of quiet mornings, joyful gatherings of family and friends. Holmesdale became a place of cherished memories, heartfelt connections, and deep gratitude for the privilege of preserving and caring for such an irreplaceable piece of Berkshire history.
To experience Holmesdale is to step into a story that began more than 175 years ago. A story of literature, history, hospitality, and the enduring beauty of the Berkshires. It is our sincere hope that the next steward will feel the same sense of wonder and responsibility that has guided its care for generations.
