What
Enhancing Educators' and Students' Wellbeing for a Thriving Future in Education
Chiyuki Yanase
According to Mercer and Gregersen (2020), being a devoted or passionate educator can indeed be a self-sacrificing profession. However, it is essential to emphasize that dedication to teaching should not come at the cost of one's own wellbeing. The ongoing pandemic and the challenges arising from AI development have significantly compounded the stressors faced by educators and learners alike. Hence, it is imperative that we invest time in reassessing how we can better support and improve the physical and mental wellbeing of both teachers and students, ensuring our ability to thrive collectively in the future of education.
In this workshop, I will share and discuss mastery-goal-oriented activities suitable for learners of various ages, as well as sensory and mindful practices for teachers. The first part of the workshop will focus on learner wellbeing, with participants experiencing activities including mindful practices based on yoga for young learners and research-based mindful practices for secondary, as well as university students. The second part of the workshop will introduce emotion-focused coping strategies and activities designed to support teachers in enhancing their resilience to cope with potential drawbacks.

Hiroshima JALT June 2024 Event
Efficient Material Development for CLIL: Google Suite and Beyond
Dear members and friends of Hiroshima JALT,
On June 30th, 4:30pm-6:30pm, our guest presenter and ex-Hiroshima alum, Aaron Sponseller, will present on "Efficient Material Development for CLIL" focusing developing and teaching a unit or project in the classroom utilising Google Classroom. With MEXT's push for "one-device-per-student" in secondary schools via the Giga School plan, and increasing use of laptops in university classrooms, this promises to be an event that will have a lot of practical ideas and techniques for teachers to consider adopting in their own teaching contexts.
If you would like to present your research, materials, or activities for the classroom, or be involved in any upcoming seminars, workshops or share events, send us a message and we will try and get something organised.

What
A presentation and demonstration on how to effectively integrate Learning Management Systems in the classroom.
Efficient Material Development for CLIL: Google Suite and Beyond
Aaron C. Sponseller, Ph.D.
This presentation begins with an overview of various student learning management systems (LMS), highlighting primary data that shows a strong preference for Google Classroom among students. I then provide a brief introduction to essential Google Suite products, as well as a handful of other softwares and online resources, that educators and materials developers should master in order to quickly produce high quality and visually attractive materials.
The main focus of the presentation is to demonstrate the transformation of a news story or YouTube video into materials for an integrated skills unit suitable for a content and language integrated learning (CLIL) curriculum. I will introduce the software tools and processes used to convert raw materials into language learning resources ideal for both classroom and online teaching.
Next, I will demonstrate how to embed these materials into Google Suite products such as Classroom, Sites, Forms, Documents, and YouTube to create a comprehensive unit with several assignments that can be graded with just a few mouse clicks. Participants will be invited to join a sample Google Classroom as students to gain insights into the student perspective.
Finally, I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this approach from an experienced viewpoint. Understanding the diverse reasons faculty and students appreciate these materials will help attendees introduce or implement this approach effectively in their teaching context(s), ensuring mutual benefits for both students and faculty.

What
Presentations and discussion with two experienced ALTs.
Working with Japanese Teachers of English
Michelle Ugalino-Nawang
The jobs of the ALT in the JTE's perspective maybe very obvious, but how to actually work with them in harmony could be very difficult for some reasons. Although the ALT's job has dramatically changed from 2014 and up to the present, ALTS also find it difficult to find their significance in the classroom, especially in the junior high school level.
I would like to share how I managed to work well with the JTEs of the elementary and junior high schools for 20 years and what roles I played being a significant ALT alongside them with the goal of achieving a harmonious teaching and learning environment.
Model of Role Identity and Behavioral Creativity Style as Predictors of Empowerment of Assistant Language Teachers in Japan
Monalyn Saddington
The study is about how Empowerment, a crucial concept for all teachers, is influenced by the Model of Role Identity and Behavioral Creativity Style among Assistant Language Teachers in Japan. A causal and correlational quantitative approach was used to generalize and to find the relationship between variables. The results revealed that though both have significant relationships with Empowerment, Model of Role Identity has a greater influence on Empowerment compared to Behavioral Creativity Style. This shows the importance of Kanter’s theory of structural empowerment, in this case where ALTs with a much clearer role and who are not in isolation within the structure are more empowered. This implies that one of the factors necessary to foster a professional, committed and effective system for using ALTs is to recruit people who already have a strong model of role identity as educators, such as already trained teachers, or to provide much more effective and in depth training for those who do not have such a background.

Kojiro Hozawa - An investigation of language ideologies in discourses on English education in present-day Japan
This study conducted a thematic analysis of the discourses on English language education in Japan produced by the Group of Four (Erikawa, Otsu, Torikai, and Saito), four academics who are critical to the current course of study for foreign language education (English), to explore language ideologies expressed in them. The analysis of seven books written by the Group of Four (1145 pages in total) was examined, focused on whether translanguaging ideology existed in their discourses and if not, what language ideologies they have. “Translanguaging” refers to the deployment of full linguistic repertoire often seen in language use by bilinguals and multilinguals (Otheguy, García & Reid, 2015). It is a concept developed to empower vulnerable population to learn language and other subjects. The analysis revealed that the Group of Four put emphasis on developing Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency through utilizing Japanese as a scaffolding while belittling Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills. In their discourses, they expressed highly static, idealized, homogenous, and prescriptive standard language ideology based on native-speakerism, leaving no room for hybridity and multimodal creativity that the translanguaging theory proposes. As a result of this prescriptive view of language education, the deficit ideology was found in their discourses.
Alexander Hay - Understanding English learners' laughter
Laughter is part of many conversations, but rarely do we stop and analyse why laughter is present in a conversation. Of course, humour is what most people would think of, but that is not the only reason to be found. That is why this research was conducted, to see if laughter was present in communication, specifically when speaking in a second language, and the reasons for this laughter.
The study reported in this presentation sought to explore the reasons for laughter that could be found in L2 communication, specifically in the English conversations of Japanese native speakers. To do this, 10 pairs of participants had conversations on topics that were judged likely to cause laughter. These conversations were conducted online and were recorded, followed by a Verbal Analysis Protocol, where the participants retroactively identified and explained their reasons for each point at which they laughed. The conversation data was then analysed through the use of Conversation Analysis, using simple transcriptions of the conversations. A total of 14 separate causes for laughter were given by the participants, which were then sorted into four categories by the researcher. The presentation will demonstrate how the research was conducted, report the findings from the study, and suggest both implications of this study and possible avenues for future research into laughter in conversation.
Yui Miura - English prosody instruction for second language learners — Mirroring and Channeling
Before the Audiolingual Method became a mainstream method in 1940s–1960s, not much attention had not been paid to teaching pronunciation in foreign-language education and the focus was on accurate pronunciation of segmental phonemes. However, after the Audiolingual Method declined in late 1960s–1970s, teaching began to become oriented toward more communicative approaches. Accordingly, the focus shifted from segmental phonemes to suprasegmental features, such as rhythm and intonation, which play important roles in promoting intelligibility. Mirroring and Channeling are one of the teaching methods for improving second language learners’ intelligibility and delivery, which includes the convergence of pragmatic meaning such as speaker’s confidence and emotion. The current study examined how intelligibility and delivery improved in the speech of a Japanese learner of English through Mirroring and Channeling in which the participant transferred the model of Mirroring to her own self-introduction and reading a textbook. This presentation will provide a demonstration of these two methods and report the results of the study.
