The joint Hinode-18 / IRIS-16 meeting will be held at University College London in London, United Kingdom, during 23-27 June 2025. This meeting will provide a vibrant forum to discuss recent advancements and novel scientific findings from observations by Hinode, IRIS, and other space- and ground-based instruments. Discussion of future missions Solar-C and MUSE is also included in the scope of the meeting.
Hinode explores the magnetic fields of the Sun in order to improve our understanding of what powers the solar atmosphere and drives solar eruptions. Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) measures the strength and direction of the Sun's magnetic field on the solar surface, the photosphere. Combined with two other Hinode instruments, the EUV imaging spectrometer (EIS) and the X-ray telescope (XRT), the mission is designed to investigate the causes of eruptions in the solar atmosphere and to relate those eruptions to the intense heating of the corona and the mechanisms that drive the constant outflow of solar mass, the solar wind.
IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) is a NASA Small Explorer Mission that uses high-resolution UV imaging spectrograph to investigate how the solar atmosphere is energized. IRIS observations focus on the chromosphere and transition region of the Sun, a complex interface region between the photosphere and corona. IRIS fills a crucial gap in our ability to advance Sun-Earth connection studies by tracing the flow of energy and plasma through these layers of solar atmosphere.Â
