The High Plains Model Railroad Club was founded on January 28, 1988. The club initially met at various locations until the High Plains Museum in McCook gave the group a home in late 1988. The Club moved to the present site in 1995. When you visit the club you can view HO scale model trains and O scale model trains. The sets and scenery are done entirely by club members. The HO tracks run on DCC. At least five trains can be run at a time.
The club meets weekly on Tuesdays with a business meeting held on the first Tuesday of the month. Depending on the schedules of the club members and the events of the time of the year, some Tuesdays the club does not meet.
The Club hosts various events throughout the year. In the spring numerous school children tour the club as part of a city wide school trip. The students are given information about trains and train history of McCook.
October Heritage Days Celebration in McCook also includes an open house on Saturday of the weekend. The public can view the model trains before and after the parade.
December brings Christmas Open house at the High Plains Model Railroad Club. Usually this is held the first two Saturdays in December starting late morning and into the afternoon. The public is invited to come and view the trains and layouts. In the past this has been a fun time for the young as well as those "young at heart"!
If you wish to visit the club at other times, arrangements can be made with a member or by email.
