Our long-time collaborator, Dr. Reza GHOLIZADEH from Prof. Tsuji's lab at Kyoto University, Japan comes to visit us for 2 weeks. Reza helped us a lot in the past, on tensile testing of miniature samples and also on atom probe tomography. We expect fruitful discussions with Reza, this time at Chalmers!

MSE 2024 finally happens in Darmstadt. Here we organize a HEA symposium: S02: High Entropy Alloys: From basic research to industrial applications. Although the scope is much smaller than Euromat, we still manage to have 9 sessions with interesting talks. Yao and Sheng attended MSE 2024 and both presented at the S02 symposium.

Yao's first paper from his PhD work got published at Physical Review Materials. It's about quantifying local lattice distortion in bcc-structured refractory high-entropy alloys using mainly the neutron total scattering method. More details can be found here. We welcome Dr. Salman Farissi to join us, working as a new postdoc on the topic of PFAS removal using the electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP). Salman will dedicate his time to develop novel anode materials based on high-entropy oxides/graphene composites. Salman will be co-supervised by Dr. Zhenyuan (Jeff) Xia from Industrial and Materials Science and Prof. Thomas Pettersson from Architecture and Civil Engineering.

A German version of Euromat, MSE 2024, will happen this September in Darmstadt. We will organize a HEA symposium there: S02: High Entropy Alloys: From basic research to industrial applications. It will have less attendants compared to Euromat, which might necessarily not be a bad thing at all.

Another good news for November! Our application to the joint WASP-WISE project call was successful. We will work together with Prof. Christian Berger at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, here at Chalmers, to use machine learning to accelerate the materials development for refractory high-entropy alloys.

Sheng's 3rd VR (Swedish Research Council) project was funded! This time on corrosion of refractory high-entropy alloys in molten aluminum. We got involved in this line of research rather recently. We will probably seek one PhD student for this project soon.

The second paper from Xiaolong's PhD work gets published at Materials Research Express. It a nice continuation of his first work, but this time it's not softening in the whole temperature range anymore; we managed to get softening at room temperature (hopefully to get some tensile ductility), while hardening at elevated temperatures (to maintain or to achieve the high-temperature strength). We welcome our new postdoc, Dr. Kagan Sarlar, to our team. Kagan will be involved in both the WISE and CoCoMag EU project, working on magnetocaloric materials. Kagan's work here at Chalmers will combine machine learning and experimental verification.

Euromat 2023 takes place in Frankfurt. Sheng is co-organizing the B05 HEA Symposium, which has 13 (almost) full sessions. Both Xiaolong and Yao attend the HEA Symposium and present a poster and an oral talk, respectively. Bala could not join this time, but Bala's results will be presented by the main PhD supervisor, Prof. Lars Nyborg.

The very first installment of the WISE Welcome meeting is held at Kolmården, on 28-30 August 2023. Unfortunately, our new WISE postdoc Kagan cannot join this time for the WISE Welcome meeting, but very soon Kagan will be with us working on the rare-earth-element free magnetocaloric materials. We keep going towards the functionality direction of HEAs. More will happen, for sure.

Bala will visit Prof. Tsuji's lab at Kyoto University, Japan for 2 months, sponsored by the Axel Hultgrens Foundation. Bala's visit is a continuation of our fruitful collaborations with Japan, and in particular with Prof. Tsuji's group. Together, we have published quite a few papers on high-entropy alloys.

Sheng attend the DSEC VII, Directionally Solidified Eutectics Conference – VII, at the impressive city of Istanbul. It was a small and nice community, and people really have passion about regular, irregular, normal and anomalous eutectics there! Maybe not so much interest for eutectic high entropy alloys there? That's okay.

Sheng attended the joint WISE-WASP workshop at the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA). It is very nice to know that WISE and WASP will work together soon to promote the collaboration between materials science and artificial intelligence, and calls for funding will be announced later this year. AI + Materials Science is certainly fun and exciting!

Sheng attended the first-ever internal WISE conference, which was held in Stockholm at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) on 22-23 March 2023. The WISE Dialogue includes the WISE community and representatives from industry and society and serves as a kick-off for future conversations covering sustainability through material science. The WISE community will meet again in the late August.

This is exciting: Our second try with the EIC Pathfinder application was dramatically funded, from the waiting list! More information about the CoCoMag (Multi-property Compositionally Complex Magnets for Advanced Energy Applications) project will be revealed soon, but it is certainly coming. One more step, from us, going into the functional applications of HEAs.

Happy New Year! We have two visitors in the beginning of a new year: Sofia Kazi, visiting master student from University of Ioannina, Greece, and Atsuya Watanabe, visiting PhD student from Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan. Sofia will stay with us for 4 months, working together with Bala on metastable dual-phase high entropy alloys, while Astuya will stay us for about 3 months, working together with our colleague Zhenyuan Xia (Jeff) on electrodeposition of high-entropy/medium-entropy alloy coatings. Some good news to end the busy November! Our project on rare-earth-element free magnetocaloric materials, using the concept of high-entropy alloys, has been funded by WISE (Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability). More information about the WISE call and the results can be found here. We will recruit one postdoc researcher for this project (apply before Apr 7th).

Supported by the STINT project “Semisolid Processing of High-Entropy Alloys”, colleagues from University of Campinas (UNICAMP) will come to visit us at Chalmers. We will exchange our recent research findings regarding processing and mechanical properties of high-entropy alloys, and discuss ways to continue the collaboration on topics where we share the common research interest. Look forward to seeing some of our old friends, Joao, Rubens and Kaio!

Our long-term collaboration with Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia has led to a new PRB paper, on the NMR local study of the Al0.5TiZrPdCuNi alloy in high-entropy alloy. We are still working on this rather unique alloy, and hopefully more results will be available in the near future.

Yao Hu joined us as new PhD student. Yao will work on the SwedNess project, focusing on lattice distortion and short-range order in refractory high-entropy alloys (to begin with, at least). Yao will be placed in the Physics Department at Chalmers, and the supervision will be shared between Magnus and Sheng, together with Ehsan from Jönköping University. Welcome, Yao!

Our collaboration with DTU and Kyoto University has led to a new MSEA publication on quantitative correlation between microstructure development and mechanical properties in the recrystallized AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy, a perfect Christmas gift.

The big day for Adrianna has been confirmed, and she will defend her PhD thesis just before Christmas, December 17th. We are still working very hard on the two heterogeneity engineering related manuscripts though, and we think they are exciting results! We are so grateful to all the collaborators that have been helping us from different perspectives, without whom the work would be impossible to implement and to complete.

Sheng will go to DESY at Hamburg for some interesting in-situ tests on high-entropy alloys. Not much can be said at the moment, but the keywords are cryogenic and high-pressure. This is the second travelling for Sheng since 2020, after coming back from Brazil last January. We still look forward to visiting Brazil and China soon, since we have on-going mobility projects with partners in these two countries.

Our first work on nucleation control in additively manufactured ferritic steels was published in Scripta Materialia. This is an outcome of an on-going collaboration work with KTH and some industrial partners. We are now also working on additive manufacturing of high-entropy and medium entropy alloys. Saad's efforts to use alumizing to improve the oxidation resistance of refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) have paid off. We finally managed to form protective Al2O3 scale on the surface of ductile RHEAs! We are really excited to share the result with the community, with the link to our new publication provided here.

Our new application to STINT (The Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education) Initiation Grants has been successful! This is also the third time that we receive financial support from STINT Initiation Grants. We will extend our collaborations with Profs. Rubens Caram and Joao Batista Fogagnolo at University of Unicampas, Brazil, on semi-solid processing of high-entropy alloys.

Adrianna's licentiate thesis is basically about microstructure characterisation of the AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy and near-eutectic AlCoCrFeNix alloys, and also recrystallisation study of the AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy.

Sheng went to Sandvik Materials Technology (SMT) located at Sandviken Sweden to attend the update meeting on the ALigHT II project, coordinated by Jönköpong University. ALigHT II is a full-scale project based on a previous pre-study project ALighT I, both supported by VINNOVA SIO Metallisk Material, on the topic of using the high-entropy alloy concept to design superalloys. It differs from our current efforts to develop high-entropy superalloys though in that ALigHT I and ALigHT II are more towards the superalloys side, while our project is more towards the high-entropy alloys side, from the compositional design perspective.

While still working on improving the oxidation resistance of RHEAs, we also actively explore the functionality of RHEAs, like corrosion resistance which is topic of the new work, and also biomedical applications, with results coming out soon (hopefully).

Our work on aluminizing of ductile refractory high-entropy alloys is published at Intermetallics. Alloying and surface treatments are two ways to enhance the oxidation resistance of refractory high-entropy alloys, and aluminizing is our first effort to try surface treatments. Our joint efforts with IIT Hyderabad and Kyoto University led to a new work published in Scientific Reports, which showed how partial recrystallization and inhomogeneity after thermo-mechanical treatments can be used to tune the mechanical properties of eutectic high-entropy alloys. We were granted a new MAX4ESSFUN supported project, on studying the annealing and re-crystallization behavior of eutectic high-entropy alloys. This is almost a seamless continuation of our on-going collaboration with DTU on using neutron or synchrotron X-ray to study the deformation and annealing behavior of high-entropy alloys.

We will get more involved in using large facilities like neutron scatting and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Adrianna will go to ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) at Grenoble, France in the middle of November, and later on in early December, Sheng and Adrianna will go to ISIS ( ISIS Neutron and Muon Source at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) at Didcot, UK, to study the recrystallization and deformation behavior of eutectic high-entropy alloys in-situ.
