Abstract:
Researchers have been attempting to determine if there is a connection between playing video games and an increase in violent behaviors. This has mostly been studied through a direct correlation relationship focus. This paper attempts to introduce a new idea, that video games can indirectly cause violence by changing the morals of those who play the games. This is tested through the use of the Trolley Problem, a test designed to determine the morals of those who take it. A survey conducted at Hampton High School in Allison Park, PA with value of n=49 uses comparisons between participant responses to the Trolley Problem and video game demographics to infer conclusions. The paper argues that there is a correlation between the maturity of video games played and responses to the Trolley Problem. The paper also argues that this correlation is most likely due to people choosing games to play that align with their predetermined morals. However, the paper states that these findings do not serve as a good reference due to the limitations of the study. It suggests further, more accurate and applicable, studies to be held in order to determine if there is a true correlation.
