Abstract:
In recent discussion, gender equality has been a prominent political discussion, with feminist ideas spreading outside of the political spectrum and into the daily lives of American citizens. This has brought many industries into question on how they portray men and women in comparison to each other, with it being largely noted that men tend to be more favorably portrayed. This paper investigates if this trend is present not only in mainstream media but in English classrooms as well. The research conducted consisted of a content analysis of a sample of works read in Hampton High School’s honors English classes, coding for character traits and gender distribution.
