February 5, 2026: A paper titled “Morning peak of Meiyu/Baiu rainfall over the East China Sea and western Japan” has been published in SOLA (GEWEX special edition).
This study investigates the diurnal variation of precipitation associated with the Meiyu/Baiu front from a climatological perspective. During the Baiu season, the region extending from the East China Sea to Kyushu experiences particularly large amounts of precipitation, and despite being over the ocean, exhibits a pronounced diurnal cycle. Specifically, precipitation reaches a maximum in the morning (06:00–11:00 LT) and a minimum at night (19:00–23:00 LT). We newly demonstrate that this diurnal variation is driven by the diurnal cycle of moisture transport into the Baiu frontal zone over this region.
