1. try to think on how to resolve the trouble you met. look into literature how similar things might have been done. Follow an existing protocol as a starter is also fine.

2. talk about your trouble and brainstorm with others.

3. Document well how different things are tried to resolve the issue. The troubleshooting progress is very important and the most precious part rather than the only condition that works.

4. Make sure the records of working conditions are also documented for everyone. The Instruments are not the most important, the protocols are.

There are many academic databases designed for literature search. You may choose the appropriate system you'd like. But literature search is one of many essential techniques any person in academic research should possess. So please treat this very seriously.

Use different keywords, different combinations to work out a structured way to search for relevant publication related to your research.

Find a good citation management software and workflow that works for you.

If you like bibtex it's fine, if you like mendeley, zotero, endnote, they are all fine.

The purposes for bachelor and intern participation in labs are exposing you to how experiments are planned and done and getting familiar with research environment.

Master students

For master students, planning and carrying out fully a reserach project is a must course as training.

It is preferred that master students can think and carryout systematic experiment that learns to development of a reliable protocol and technology.

It's preferred that master students starting to try writing for journal to get you familiar with academic writing. It will also help with your thesis. Writing a master thesis is a must.

Each participant will earn credit for the paper. Major contributions means you will have a your name on the authors list. For small contribution, you will be acknowledgements.

Basically, who writes the paper will be first author. This is to encourage everyone to try to write academically for publications as part of your title training.

Irrespective if you want to continue on academic carrier, practice good summarization of your work is very important.

If anyone did the experiments and produce the data. You will be in the coauthor list, and bares responsibility for your experimental results.

Data sharing


Over the time inevitably we need to share data to our colleagues and vice versa.

sharing your own data to others are quite easy as you can allow your files on the cloud to be accessed by the public or people with link..


Allowing others to send files to you without first taking alot of space is another quite annoying matter.

One approach is to use

  1. online cloud storage service, with running risk of data exploitation.

  2. filesender

  3. you could do it in onedrive if you have a university or business office 365 subscription and the network admin enabled anyone access

  4. Similar folder access can be done in Google drive provided you have enough space.
