Working principles 出勤政

1. safety first. But it's not asking you to be in battle mode. Anyone in the lab, should be aware of the danger in all aspects. And be concern of your colleagues' safety. If you had an incident, no matter big or small, let's talk about it. A "fault-tree" analysis for laboratory incidents should be discussed fully, it's a learning experience for everyone including me.

2. Take laboratory notes! for all the training and the experiments this is a must. Take notes so you can trace your steps, and more importantly, people always forget, take notes as detailed as possible at first help you recall the memory faster.

3. The weekly working hours is by university policy. I'll be working more. But you don't necessarily have to. Manage your time at your pace. If working night shift works for you, then do it. But if your experiments carries more risks, try not to do it alone. If you like to work on weekends and take weekdays vacation, talk to me, it can be ok.

4. Risk management is key in experiments. talk to your colleagues, talk to me about experiments. Google for more information in literature first during experimental design. Know the limit of your methods and techniques. Know the safety risks of each step.

5. Present progress and results in a clear logical manner at group meeting.

Guidelines for newcomers 新進實驗室人員守則

1. Learn from your colleagues. Learn from their published work and their current work, perhaps you will get new ideas or new collaboration opportunities, at the least, you'll get to think about how to bridge your work with that of others.

2. Look around in the lab! look into the inventory, look into the instruments available to you so you can plan your work and your research more effectively.

3. Always take notes of how instruments are operated. and you should keep in mind how things work even the workflow is very straightforward. Keep in mind the hierarchy of car builders, repairman, and drivers.

4. Safety

Intra-laboratory communication 實驗室內溝通

Standard communication within lab is email or mobile call for emergency.

All laboratory members should join in on LINE for the lab.

For emails, i might send emails at odd time,s but you can wait till working hours to reply.

We can also try out some new tools to help us keep track of progress (on your part and on my part)

option: Laboratory Notion page.

Lab(Group) meetings 實驗室會議(咪停)

Since a lab meeting carries out within the group, i would encourage everyone to treat it as a learning process between lab members

lab meeting is a platform for information exchange.

one can present

1. ongoing experiments

2. hypothesis

3. completed projects in full form

4. journal clubs

5. conference presentation practice talks

but to me, I think it's a very important place to share what you are doing, what troubles you have, how you try to resolve or resolved them.

If there are limited interactions opportunities between members if your lab group is big and everyone is busy, then lab meeting is probably the only place to do it.

It will be important for others to know what's going on in the lab, know about troubles people in the lab have, give their feedback, or learn from your mistakes and knowhows.

Lab meetings are within lab, while information should be clear, they don't necessarily need to be in complete form, the progress is more important. And important protocols should be shared to your lab mates. (things that don't necessarily shared in conferences or write on papers) But protocol is the treasure of the lab and the foundation of making things work properly and consistently. So i will encourage everyone to conduct on this principle as a good laboratory practice.

One will be trying to convey key results without too much information to clutter the audience in conferences, but that shouldn't be the case in group meetings.

More information to me is always better. if something works, why does it work, what else did you try will not work can also be important to other people.

I hold the position of arguing concise presentation is not necessarily a good thing for academic research, but it depends on the presentation style. Work your way to decide what kind of style you'd like to use.
