For the last two thousand years, men and women have been studying Latin as a foundational and essential part of education. To this day, Latin is still the language of law and the sciences and the evidence of Latin’s legacy on Western Civilization surrounds us everywhere we go.
I find reading ancient texts in the original Latin language to be one of the most deeply beautiful and fruitful ways to open ones’ mind to the world of ideas, and is truly the best way I have ever encountered to mastering the English language. In the words of Latin scholar Reginald Foster, “Latin is the best thing that ever happened to humanity. It leaves you zero room for nonsense. You don’t have to be a genius. But it requires laser-sharp concentration and total maturity."
In our class, students will begin reading and understanding Latin from day one and we will go on to discover what life was truly like for Romans living two thousand years ago. Over the course of this year, we will dive into Roman culture, education, daily life, society, art, archaeology, mythology, beliefs, and holidays, and we will even learn how significantly the medical and legal fields today rely on Latin as we explore medical and legal terminologies.
I cannot wait to lead you on this journey.
