How does music inspire you? How does it shape what you think, do, and become?
These are all questions we sought to answer with Hermitzine 8: The Music Edition. The zine prompt was simple: choose a song, musical artist, or genre that inspires you, then create a Hermitcraft-centric piece (illustrated or written) that focuses on that inspiration. With more than 50 illustrations and several incredible written contributions, it's safe to say that thew quality of Hermitzine 8 is truly symphonic!

Of course you do! While it's a shame that we don't have an infinite wellspring of fan-written works, our excellent writers deserve all the credit for bringing us their talents and expertise. If you find yourself skimming through one of our editions, and wishing there was a single place you could read through all our written works, look no further! We host an (optional!) Archive of our Own collection, which any participant is free to publish their piece in. Go take a look!
Hi, Marzo here! As the editor of Hermitzine, I get to have fun developing the "core" of each edition with my fellow mods: the typography, endpapers, title page, credits, and more. Coming up with Edition 8's core was especially fun because music is such an open-ended theme. It's is like a designer's playground — the inspiration is endless.
Take the front cover, for example. The cover is always a group effort that's worked on by multiple mods, so early on in development we came upon the idea: "What if the cover is square this time, like a record album?" Things quickly fell into place after that. One thing led to another, and we eventually ended up with a cover that emulates the record art of the famous Blue Note Records company.
It was perfect for the theme. Like, imagine getting a zine about music that comes with a custom-made record?

Promotional material is often the first impression people get of a zine, so of course it has to reflect the theme as well! With a theme such a "Music", there are an inifinite number of possible visuals to go for, both in terms of the physicality of music (vinyls, music sheets, CDs, ...) and aesthetics associated with specific music genres.
Both the theme announcement (which was animated, of course) and the contributor spotlights use torn papers, bright colors and messy drawings to call back to the punk diy scenes. Which, coincidentally, is heavily linked to the zine scene and also a favorite of mine ;)
This edition was our first time doing contributor spotlights; personalized graphics introducting each contributor through a short blurb they wrote. Their piece is also featured in the background, so it also functions as previews!
Below you can see the promotional work that Marzo and Cloud/Ray did, and the different directions they took to represent the "Music" theme!
