Wrestling – is considered the national sport of the Moldovans. This type of sport is practiced almost by each locality, including by children who try in this way to check their powers when throwing the opponent. The wrestling is a type of fight hand to hand between two or more unarmed individuals who intend to grapple each other. It is kindred with Greco-Roman Wrestling. It is prohibited to hit the fallen opponent and the fight is stopped until the opponent is recovered. In 1968, the Moldovan filmmaker, Anatol Codru, made the film „Wrestling”, where are illustrated the traditions of this sport.
Football – is the king of all sports and it is the most popular including in our country. We have national championship between the clubs, championships of the inferior divisions and championships of juniors. Football is practiced both by boys and girls. Both, the club teams and national teams have played during the time very good games which impressed the football of Europe. Speaking about the performances of the club teams we can say that the best results achieved Zimbru Chisinau, Sheriff Tiraspol and Dacia Chisinau which were qualified in the groups of UEFA Cup and respectively Europa League.
Rugby - is a popular type of sport in Moldova, especially that in the last years the national team achieves more good results. And the European Federation of rugby accepts more often to organize the European championships in the Republic of Moldova. The last ten years brought the highest distinctions. Thus, the Moldovan team is in the list of the best Rugby world teams – 7 (a union of rugby teams from 7 players) and at the European Championship of 2007, Moldova won the bronze medal.
Box - is a type of sport especially appreciated for the performances the sportsmen achieved. In fact the most medals the Republic of Moldova won at the Olympic Games are medals acquired for this type of sport.
In November 2017, our grade 7 students at Heritage were visited by the former Minister of Youth and Sport - Octavian Ticu.
He is a former Minister of Youth and Sport (Feb-May 2013), a historian, writer, politician and boxing champion. He represented Moldova at the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, US, in 1996, and won other multiple international awards. He is also famous for the daring articles he writes for Radio Free Europe against the corrupt ruling politicians, and is a host/guest at many TV shows about historical and political topics. He is a member of the Commission for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Moldova. At present, he is a researcher-coordinator at the Institute of History, Academy of Science of Moldova.
He visited us at an English lesson, and told us how he became a boxer and a historian, at the same time.
This was a memorable and inspiring experience for the Heritage students.

In Germany almost everyone can play football and most people love it.

70% of the people in Germany do sports, but the most famous sport is is football. Over 7.000.000 people are members of the DFB (the German Football Association). Germany has one of the best football-ligues and the footballclub with the most fans on the world. They are the football world championship winner, too.

Greece has risen to prominence in a number of sporting areas in recent decades. Football in particular has seen a rapid transformation, with the Greek national football team winning the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship. Many Greek athletes have also achieved significant success and have won world and olympic titles in numerous sports during the years, such as basketball, wrestling, water polo, athletics, weightlifting, with many of them becoming international stars inside their sports. The successful organisation of the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games led also to the further development of many sports and has led to the creation of many world class sport venues all over Greece and especially in Athens. Greek athletes have won a total 146 medals for Greece in 15 different Olympic sportsat the Summer Olympic Games, including the Intercalated Games, an achievement which makes Greece one of the top nations globally, in the world's rankings of medals per capital.
Volleyball is a popular sport in Greece. The major achievements of the Greek men’s national volleyball team are two bronze medals, one in the Men’s European Volleyball Championship and another one in them Men’s European Volleyball League, a 5th place in the Olympic Games and a 6th place in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship. Olympiacos is the most successful volleyball club in the country having won the most domestic titles and being the only Greek club to have won European trophies; they have won two CEV Cups, they have been CEV Champions League runners-up twice and have also played in many final fours in the European competitions, making them one of the biggest volleyball clubs in Europe.
Greece has a long tradition and history of success in basketball. The Greek Basket League is the top professional basketball league in Greece and one of the strongest in Europe, while several Greek clubs have won major European titles. A number of Greek players have gained notability for their achievements such as Nikos Galis, widely regarded as one of the all-time greatest players in international basketball history, Panagiotis Giannakis , Panagiotis Fasoulas , Fanis Christodoulou, Theodoros Papaloukas, Vasilis Spanoulis and Dimitris Diamantidis. The first official men's basketball championship in Greece was held in the 1927–28 season. Until 1963 however, there was no unified national championship, and the champion was chosen through games between the regional champions. In 1963, the A National Category was created. In 1992, the championship abandoned its amateur status and was officially recognized by FIBA Europe as a fully professional league under the name HEBA A1, organized by the Hellenic Basketball Clubs Association (HEBA). The league now operates under the name of Greek Basket League.
Greece was home of the ancient Olympic Games, first recorded in 776 BC in Olympia, and hosted the modern Olympic Games twice, the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympics and the 2004 Summer Olympics; the country also hosted the 1906 Intercalated Games, at the time regarded as Olympic Games but not officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee today. The nation has competed at every Summer Olympic Games, one of the only four countries to have done so, and most of the Winter Olympic GamesHaving won a total of 110 medals (30 gold, 42 silver and 38 bronze), Greece is ranked 32nd by gold medals in the all-time Summer Olympic medal count. GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO
Antetokounmpo was born in Athens, Greece on December 6, 1994, the son of immigrants from Nigeria.[7][8] Three years earlier, his parents had moved from Lagos, leaving behind their firstborn son, Francis, with his grandparents.[9] Even though Antetokounmpo and three of his four brothers were born in Greece, they did not automatically qualify to receive full Greek citizenship.[7] For the first 18 years of his life, Antetokounmpo had no papers from Nigeria or Greece.[10]
Antetokounmpo grew up in the Athens neighborhood of Sepolia.[8] The New York Times reported: "Like many other immigrants to Greece, his parents struggled to find work. Antetokounmpo and his older brother, Thanasis, helped out byhawking items such as watches, bags and sunglasses."[11] In 2007, Antetokounmpo started playing basketball[10] and by 2009 was playing competitively for the youth squad of Filathlitikos.
Dimitrios "Dimitris" Diamantidis (born May 6, 1980) is a retired Greek professional basketball player, who spent all twelve seasons of his EuroLeague career withPanathinaikos Athens. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Europeans ever to grace the game, he marked his era by being the most versatile player in the EuroLeague, serving as an inspiration to a whole generation of young European stars.
