Electrochromic devices modulate light transmittance in response to an applied voltage. When integrated into windows in buildings and vehicles, they can control the transmission of visible and infrared light to reduce energy consumption. Operating on electrochemical principles similar to those of batteries while also changing their optical properties, these devices can be viewed as “transparent batteries” that regulate light transmission. Our laboratory explores materials synthesis, electrolyte design, and thin-film coating techniques to achieve rapid and stable optical modulation across the visible and infrared regions. We also extend these approaches to next-generation absorptive and reflective displays. This research offers opportunities to explore a broad range of fields, including semiconductor materials synthesis and design, thin-film processing, electrochemistry, optics, simulation, and device fabrication and characterization.
Water electrolysis uses an applied voltage to electrochemically split water and produce hydrogen, a clean fuel. As a key component of water electrolysis systems, the membrane must combine sufficient mechanical strength to withstand high gas pressures with high ionic conductivity and chemical durability. Our laboratory precisely tailors the properties of semiconductor nanocrystals to develop polymer–nanocrystal composite membranes with enhanced performance and durability.
Modern weapon systems rely on detection technologies operating across multiple spectral bands, including infrared and radio frequencies (RF), making signature reduction technologies essential for reducing detectability across these bands. Our laboratory combines materials development, simulation, and processing techniques to develop high-performance signature reduction materials for multispectral applications.
