Human-in-the loop paradigm for assistive robotics

Abstract

Over the years, robots have become increasingly present in industrial and social contexts. The collaboration and interaction between humans and robots is fundamental in several fields, such as assistive robotics. The complementary capabilities of humans and robots can be used to improve the quality of the interaction and the reliability and naturalness of the robot behaviour: the main strengths of each partner are combined to achieve a task performance superior to that achieved by the individual partners. Introducing the human user in the control loop of the robot will facilitate the co-existence of the two agents, guaranteeing an interactive learning and promoting bidirectional communication between humans and robots in the so-called human-in-the-loop control and learning.

The workshop aims at bringing together roboticists and computer scientists to present a variety of current approaches aiming at including humans in the interaction with robotic systems endowing robots with cognition abilities, guaranteeing user satisfaction and improving technology acceptability. Real-world applications in assistive robotics will be also discussed with special reference to the advancements in the framework of the H2020-FETOPEN-2018-2019-2020-01Project “SOMA - Ultrasound peripheral interface and in-vitro model of human somatosensory system and muscles for motor decoding and restoration of somatic sensations in amputees”.
