Per the Hells Angels official website, they operate over five continents with over 475 chapters in 62 countries. The Criminal Intelligence Service Canada describes the Hells Angels as the largest "outlaw motorcycle gang" in the country, with active chapters concentrated mostly in Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia. However, recent criminal activity within Chapters of the United States suggests that the founding state of California is a significant area of concern.
This map shows 17 of the 22 chapters currently residing in California. The Hells Angels have a significant and troubled presence in California, as evidenced by recent legal developments. The motorcycle gang has been involved in a range of criminal activities, including violence, murder, and racketeering, leading to the indictment and sentencing of several members. In a recent case, members of the Hells Angels in California were involved in a criminal enterprise that included the murder and illegal cremation of another member. Jeremy Greer, a member from Sonoma County, was sentenced to seven years for his participation in violent crimes associated with a racketeering conspiracy. Merl Hefferman, from the Fresno chapter, received a four-year sentence for obstruction of justice related to arranging the illegal cremation of a murdered Hells Angel. Additionally, A grand jury has indicted 17 members and associates of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang for a brutal and seemingly unprovoked attack on three Black men in San Diego. The assault occurred on June 6 in the Ocean Beach neighborhood. The victims, aged 19, 20, and 21, were chased by Hells Angels members, with one victim beaten until losing consciousness and another beaten and stabbed.
This map represents the distribution of HAMC chapters within the U.S. and Canada. With their founding in 1948 in Fontana, California the HAMC has still maintained a strong presence on the West Coast, and the majority of their convictions in the past five years have been aimed towards the leadership of the California chapters. In recent news, two members of the Sonoma County chapter were recently sentenced to federal prison. Jeremy Greer, 43, was sentenced to seven years for multiple assaults, armed robbery, home invasion robbery, and witness intimidation. Merl Hefferman, 54, was sentenced to four years for arranging the illegal cremation of a former Hells Angel member who was murdered at the club's Fresno clubhouse.
The Map also shows the HAMC presence in Canada, specifically with five chapters in Quebec and 14 in Ontario. This is mainly due in part to the absorption of the Popeyes biker gang in 1977, with the Hells Angels quickly establishing themselves with the Quebec drug trade. This territorial takeover also led to the Quebec Biker War, an almost decade-long territorial conflict between the Hells Angels and the Rock Machine.
This map is directly from the Hells Angels website showing their membership across the world. Membership varies per country. however, some areas of interest outside the United States and Canada are Spain, Denmark, and Germany.
Spain - The HAMC established its first Spanish charters in Barcelona and Valencia on 19 April 1997. The club has sixteen chapters in Spain. In September 2021, sixteen people were arrested on charges of belonging to a criminal organization and drug trafficking after a joint investigation by the National Police Corps and Danish authorities into a suspected drug ring that was allegedly responsible for the shipment of drugs between Spain and Denmark.
Denmark - The Hells Angels became involved in a war with the Loyal to Familia (LTF) gang to monopolize the cannabis trade in Christiania. On 26 August 2023, a man was shot dead and four others were injured in the feud. Also, The Hells Angels have infiltrated the Port of Aarhus, the largest commercial port in Denmark. In September 2023, Keith Svendsen, Executive Vice-President of Maersk, stated that around 30 full-time and freelance employees at the port are affiliated with the Hells Angels, and use shipping containers to transport illegal items such as cocaine.
Germany - The first German charter of the Hells Angels was founded in Hamburg via a "patch over" of the Bloody Devils biker gang in March 1973. The club consists of 69 chapters and 1,400 members in Germany. In early October 2016, Giessen Chapter boss Aygun Mucuk was shot dead at the chapter clubhouse, reportedly the result of a rivalry between the Giessen Hells Angels, whose membership is largely of Turkish origin, and the long-established Hells Angels chapter in nearby Frankfurt. Additionally, eight members of the Hells Angels' Berlin charter, including the chapter president Kadir Padir, were sentenced to life in prison by a Berlin court in 2019 for the murder of Tahrir Özbek, a rival gangster with whom Padir was in a long-running conflict.
