Each lesson will cover a single interaction, dialogue, form or skill. This will help keep each lesson short and digestible. What will a lesson look like? I’m glad you asked! Here is a mockup of a sample lesson.
Getting Started - Contains a multi-panes comic (or photos) depicting the interaction and context
Picture Dictionary - Contains a photo with english subtitle for every vocab item in the lesson that can be easily depicted. Clicking on the picture plays an MP3 of someone saying the word.
Listen and Repeat - Plays a video that models the main interaction twice and includes text for support. The second time through the dialogue it has silences for the user to speak his/her own answers.
Vocabulary Flashcards - This is a link to the flashcard set for the lesson on Quizlet, where users can practice online.
Practice Online - Contains several practice activities with immediate feedback.
Download and Practice with a friend - This is a PDF that has pair practice, job aides, or similar tools to take with you.
Want More? Try these lessons - These are links to other HWESL lessons on related topics. This keeps each lesson from getting too bloated and helps users choose what to do next.
Share Buttons - Makes it easy to share the lesson with friends
What this is - This is a draft mockup of a Hello World ESL lesson layout. This focuses on the structure and key elements. You can see the stages of the lesson, and that they are nonlinear and give the user choice in how they use it.
What this is not - This mockup does not show the actual aesthetic design. It does not include color palette, themes, or any other “artsy” elements. We need someone with a clue to help with that.
