Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do users access Hello World ESL?
Hello World ESL can be accessed from any browser with internet connectivity like wifi, ethernet, and 3G. Users can access it through personal computers, tablets and smartphones, or from publicly accessible computers at libraries and community centers.
2. Is this a virtual classroom?
No. Hello World ESL is a self-guided study tool. Users work through the lessons on their own. We may add virtual classes at later date, but that is not part of our initial implementation.
3. Is this an app?
No. Users use their web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE, etc) to access the system. You can create a desktop icon that makes it easy to go straight to Hello World ESL without remembering the URL. We may build an app, but that’s not critical to fulfill our mission.
4. There are already language learning apps and program like Rosetta Stone and Duolingo. Why do we need another one?
While those are great, none of them focus on the day-to-day living needs of refugees. Hello World ESL is a focused tool that teaches users the language and skills that are critical for regaining independence and rebuilding a life in their new home.
5. Aren’t there enough language classes out there?
Many organizations offer free classes to refugees, but there are not enough. Hello World ESL complements and expands upon existing services. It can be challenging to find enough qualified volunteer instructors, and for refugees to attend classes especially once starting a regular job.
6. Does this replace classroom study?
This does not replace the classroom, but adds kinds of support not possible in a classroom. It is, however, free from the time and space constraints of a classroom, and users can repeat lessons when and where they need to. A user could even review a lesson on speaking with doctors while sitting in the waiting room at a clinic.
7. Who will teach the classes?
Hello World ESL is not a classroom with teachers. Each self-access lesson includes videos, online exercises, supporting text, and practice activities.
8. What if refugees don’t have a computer or smartphone?
We are seeking to build partnerships with organizations that will donate tablets. smartphones, and Chromebooks as well as connectivity that we can put into the hands of refugees. Additionally, many libraries, community centers, support services, and other organizations provide free access to computers and internet connectivity.
9. What about non-literate users? Can they use Hello World ESL?
We are exploring exciting technologies and system designs to provide graphical and vocal navigation system for Hello World’s non-literate users. We don’t want to leave anyone behind.
10. How will refugees find out about Hello World ESL?
We are building partnerships with government agencies, aid organizations, and community and religious institutions that work with refugees on a daily basis. We will work through them to ensure refugees learn about Hello World ESL, and have the necessary equipment and skills to log in and start learning.
11. How much does it cost, and who is paying for this?
This is a volunteer effort. There is no cost to the end user. The minimal costs needed to maintain Hello World ESL are supported by donations. The rest of the development work, lesson design, software engineering, and artwork is supplied by an incredible team of volunteers, we like to call Agents for Change.
12. What if I’m not a refugee? Can I still use Hello World ESL?
At the moment there are no access controls that prevent anyone from using Hello World ESL.
13. Can I donate money to Hello World ESL?
I Love your enthusiasm! Thank you for your interest. We do not have systems in place at the moment to support donations. If this does not deter you, please send an email to helloworldesl@gmail.com with the word “donation” in the subject line. One of our team members will get back to you soon.
