This qualitative study included six Latinx adults ages 65–82. Participants were recruited from the UCI Family Health Center in Santa Ana and the UCI Senior Health Center. Data were collected through a perceived social support survey, a demographic survey, and a focus group. Responses were reviewed using thematic analysis to identify major patterns in participants’ experiences.
Theme 1: Practical support improves medication adherence
Participants described practical support as helpful when it included medication reminders, reliable transportation, and medication pick-up.
Theme 2: Family support can feel controlling and stigmatizing
Some participants described feeling humiliated or embarrassed when support limited their independence or created restrictions in social settings.
Participants also described barriers that made diabetes management more difficult, including:
Language barriers
Technology challenges
Diet-related challenges
Pharmacy issues, such as inaccurate medication pick-up times
Communication challenges with healthcare providers
