Managing diabetes requires consistent medication use, regular medical care, lifestyle adjustments, and daily self-management routines. This project explored how social support influences diabetes medication adherence and diabetes management among elderly Latinx individuals. Participants completed a perceived social support survey, a demographic questionnaire, and a 90-minute focus group in which they shared their experiences. The findings indicated that practical forms of support, such as medication reminders, transportation to medical appointments, and assistance with medications, were associated with improved adherence. However, some participants reported that family support could feel controlling or stigmatizing, particularly when it led to feelings of humiliation or restricted participation in social activities. The project highlights that social support can play a meaningful role in diabetes management, particularly when it is consistent, practical, and delivered with compassion.
The purpose of this study was to understand how social support affects diabetes medication adherence and diabetes management among elderly Latinx individuals. The project focused on how family, friends, and others can help or create challenges in managing the condition. This study also aimed to identify what types of support are most helpful for promoting consistent medication use and better diabetes management.
Diabetes is a major public health concern in the United States, affecting approximately 40.1 million people, with an estimated 1.5 million new cases diagnosed each year. Latinos experience a higher prevalence of diabetes, at approximately 13 percent, underscoring the need for research focused on this population. Among older Latinx adults, diabetes management is influenced by factors such as medication routines, transportation, access to pharmacies, language barriers, and support from family members or others. Gaining a deeper understanding of these experiences can help families, healthcare providers, and community programs offer support that is more respectful, practical, and emotionally supportive.
