In second grade, students will explore a wide range of math concepts that build a strong foundation for future learning. Throughout the year, your child will deepen their understanding of numbers, place value, addition and subtraction strategies, measurement, time, money, geometry, and early multiplication concepts. They’ll learn to solve real-world problems, recognize patterns, and interpret data using graphs. From telling time and counting coins to measuring objects and identifying shapes, students will engage in hands-on activities and meaningful discussions that make math come alive. We use a combination of resources from HMH Into Math and the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) Mathematics Standards to support student mastery and ensure every learner is challenged and supported. By the end of the year, your child will not only be more confident in their math skills but also ready to apply them in creative and practical ways!
This school year in English Language Arts (ELA), your second grader will engage in a rich literacy experience that includes reading a variety of texts, building foundational phonics and fluency skills, expanding vocabulary, and developing writing across genres such as narrative, informational, opinion, and poetry. Students will also explore how to analyze text features, understand author’s purpose, and conduct simple research projects. To support mastery of the Georgia Standards of Excellence in ELA, we use a combination of the Wonders reading program, 95 Phonics Core Program, and resources from the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE). These tools work together to help students grow as confident readers, writers, and thinkers throughout the year.
In second grade Social Studies, students will explore the rich history, geography, government, and economics of Georgia through six engaging units aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE). Using the Gallopade curriculum as our primary resource, students will begin by learning about Georgia’s geographic regions and rivers, then dive into the state’s founding and key historical figures like James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove. They’ll explore the cultures of the Creek and Cherokee people, study influential leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Jimmy Carter, and learn about the importance of civil and human rights. Throughout the year, students will also develop an understanding of government roles, citizenship, and basic economic concepts like saving, spending, and making choices. This comprehensive program helps students connect the past to the present while building critical thinking and map skills in a fun and meaningful way.
In 2nd grade science, students will explore exciting topics across four major units: Matter, Force and Motion, Astronomy, and Needs of Living Things. Throughout the year, they will investigate the properties of materials, how objects move, patterns in the sky, and the life cycles of plants and animals. Using hands-on experiments, observations, and inquiry-based learning, students will build foundational science skills and curiosity about the world around them. Our instruction is guided by the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) and supported by resources from HMH Science Dimensions and the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) to ensure all students achieve mastery in science.
