Getting Started with 3D Printing

This guide is aimed at beginners and will cover how to access and download a 3D model from Thingiverse that can be printed. Please review our rules for 3D printing before you begin.

Thingiverse

When you’re just getting started with 3D printing, using a pre-existing model is a good way to get a feel for the entire process from start to print. We recommend using Thingiverse.

Thingiverse is a website collection of user-created digital design files. These files can be searched by keyword (for instance, 'cat') in the top right corner.

Alternatively, under the ‘explore’ tab you can find groupings of models by categories (art, tools, etc), collections, and even challenges users have completed.

Some Considerations

As you look at different models, take note of a few things:

  • Thing Details -- This area could include details about print time, infill, object orientation, supports, or any other important information to know before printing.
  • Thing Files -- It's best to quickly click on the 'Thing Files' button (underneath the photos of the model) to double check the model is in the correct file type (STL/OBJ) and to see how many parts/pieces it might require.

Ready to Download

Once you've decided on a model that works for you, you're ready to download the files.

Clicking on the file name of the model will download the file to your computer.

Accessing Files

If you are using a library computer, all downloads will be automatically saved to the M: Drive. This can be accessed opening up Explorer, clicking on ‘This PC’ and double clicking on the M: Drive.

Once your files are downloaded, you should have a model ready to be opened and edited on the software for our 3D printers.

Please see the guides for the specific printer you are using for next steps:
