Check It Out, The New Groove Room 3.0 Is Up And Running
Our home officially grew by ten feet this year, but it feels like we’ve gained an entire universe. What started as a ten-foot extension to our lanai has been transformed into the ultimate listening sanctuary: Groove Room 3.0.
Why Groove Room 3.0? (Yes, there was a 1.0 and 2.0)
By extending the lanai, we’ve created a space that blends the open feel of the outdoors with the controlled acoustics needed for a serious listening session. Whether it’s the needle dropping on a fresh platter or the VU meters dancing on the 250M, this room is our new favorite place to be.
The heart of this room started with an incredible stroke of luck at a garage sale where I scored a vintage Marantz 250M amplifier and a 3200 preamp for just $100. They were far from "plug-and-play," but I saw the potential.
I spent the next six months meticulously rebuilding both units. I owe a massive thank you to the community at AudioKarma.org, whose online expertise helped me navigate the restoration. Today, both pieces have been brought back to original factory specs, delivering that legendary, warm Marantz glow and power. To top it off, I had custom wood cabinets meticulously crafted to give these beauties the premium aesthetic they deserve. Seeing those Marantz meters dance behind fresh wood grain is the highlight of my day. (Thanks Fred)
While the Marantz gear provides the power, the room is filled with a curated selection of classic and modern hardware to handle every format in the library:
Vinyl: A Philips 877 Turntable fitted with a high-performance Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML cartridge. (Thank You Rich)
Tape: A Pioneer Model H-R99 (8-Track), an AKAI 4000DS MK-II (Reel-to-Reel), and a TEAC CX-650R (Cassette).
Digital: The S.M.S.L VMV PL100 CD Player handles our silver discs. (not analog)
Speakers: Everything pumps through the iconic Bose 901 Series IV speakers, which fill the new extension perfectly. (Thank You Larry)
The room was built to house a sizable physical collection. We currently have over 700 vinyl records, 100 reel-to-reel tapes, 250 CDs, 50 8-tracks and 50 Cassettes. While our collection is heavily weighted towards Jazz and Rock & Roll, other genres include Classical, Comedy, Compilations, Country, Easy Listening, Folk, Funk/Soul, Opera, Pop & Soundtracks (sorry no Hip Hop). If you want to see what's on our shelves, you can browse my full searchable collection at the Groove Room Media page on this site,
The most important rule of Groove Room 3.0 happens every Sunday night: Analog Night.
From sundown to late evening, the digital world is banned. No streaming, no Bluetooth, no distractions. We select a record or a tape and experience the music exactly as it was meant to be heard.
The best part? We aren’t alone. We have friends who also enjoy their own Analog Nights. We coordinate to play the same record at the same time, creating a shared listening experience across different homes—connected by the music rather than the internet.
