The very first pioneers from Scotland came to settle in the lake
Megantic area in the middle of 19th century. Among them were
Donald Morrison's parents, the legendary Megantic outlaw. The
whole "Morrison case" began in the years 1880 when the Morrison
family lost their farm to a local money lender and had to move to
Marsden (now Milan). Morrison, who was suspected of an act of
revenge gunned down the bailiff who was supposed to arrest him.
This famous dual took place in the main street of Lac-Megantic.
Morrison eluded the police with the help of the Scottish community
of the area, from June 1888 to April 1889. He was finally captured
and imprisoned. In 1894, he was released but he died the same day.
He is buried here in the Gisla Cemetery with his family. In 1995,
the mMunicipality of Milan declared the Gisla Cemetery a Patrimonial
Site.
