1. Overview of ADU
ADU is a dedicated unit within Texas Department of Public Safety.
Specifically targets the identification, apprehension, and education of aggressive or reckless drivers.
Encourages public safety through proactive traffic enforcement and creative pursuit strategies.
2. Mission Statement
"Protect the motoring public by identifying and reducing aggressive driving behavior through professional, high-speed enforcement and education."
3. Training Objectives
Identify aggressive driving indicators.
Excel at safe pursuit methods and high-speed vehicle operation.
Learn ADU car technology and technology equipment.
Practice high-speed unit radio communication protocols.
Build decision-making skills in high-risk situations.
4. ADU Traffic Enforcement Focus
Trainees will learn to recognize and intercept:
Speeding (100+ MPH over limit)
Excessive lane changes
Tailgating
Brake-checking and road rage maneuvers
Street racing and illegal stunts
Evasion or failure to yield to police
5. ADU Vehicle Operations
Introduction to specialized ADU vehicles (chargers, interceptors, etc.)
Use of onboard radar, dash cams, and ALPRs
High-speed maneuvering techniques
Training in PIT maneuvers and deployment of spike strips
6. Pursuit Guidelines
When to initiate, continue, or terminate a pursuit
Risk vs. reward analysis
Multi-unit positioning and coordination
Secondary/support tasks during chase
7. Communication Protocols
Priority radio callouts
Suspect vehicle descriptions
Officer location and status update during pursuit
Request for roadblocks or air units (if needed)
8. Reporting & Documentation
Required post-pursuit reports
Citation documentation
Dash cam and body cam review procedures
9. Standard Uniform & Appearance
Adoption of required uniform for ADU troopers
Guidelines for marked vs. unmarked patrol vehicles
Badge and identification visibility in stops
10. Phases of Training
Phase 1: Classroom – Laws, policies, and indicators of aggressive driving
Phase 2: Simulator/Vehicle Familiarization – Maneuvering basics and stategies
Phase 3: Field Training – Guided patrols and real-time stops
Phase 4: Final Evaluation – Pursuit situations and written examination

Graduation from all phases with successful scores
Demonstration of proper pursuit judgment
Review and approval by an ADU Commanding Officer
