Located directly in front of Kumamoto Castle, Shiromi-Yagura (城見櫓) offers the finest Japanese cuisine and local Kumamoto specialities, with a perfect view of the Japanese historic landmark.
It was around 1610 that Kiyomasa Kato, the founder of Kumamoto Castle, built a spacious residence with a beautiful garden outside the castle, known as Hanabata Palace (花畑御殿).
The restaurant is in the historically significant Hanabata (花畑, "flower field") area, a name said to come from many flowering trees and plants that once filled the garden for enjoyment and leisure. When the Hosokawa clan (細川藩) succeeded the Kato clan as domain lords, they used Hanabata Palace as their primary residence, and from then on, official duties and receptions were held there. The palace remained in use until the end of the Edo period (江戸時代).
