World Hearing Day officially takes place on the 3rd of March every year. The aim of the day is to help raise awareness around hearing loss and to help encourage ear health across the globe. Every year a theme is selected by the World Health Organisation (WHO) with this year's theme being: From Communities to Classrooms, hearing care for every child

On April 1st, audiology and optometry students were invited to a mysterious breakfast in Mexico!
Following Kelley into a shipping container, we were transported to the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where we were greeted by experts to discuss the healthcare system there.
Xavier, a final year clinical audiology student said: “It was a rewarding experience to learn about the cultural similarities and differences between our health systems.”
The first of its kind in Australia, the Global Portal allows University of Melbourne students to connect and learn from experts around the world as if they are in the same room.
“What I found particularly interesting was the importance of traditional medicine in Mexico, where mothers and grandmothers are often the first ‘doctors’. This reflected values of family-based care and intergenerational knowledge, which resonated with my own upbringing. It highlighted how, despite cultural differences, we share many of the same values, something that aligns closely with HEARGlobe’s mission of fostering connection and understanding. ”

“It was a reality check to hear that healthcare is ‘not considered a human right, but a work right’. I learnt that many people rely on their workplace to cover their healthcare as part of the Bismarck system, which is a third pillar alongside the public and private systems” -

On Friday 3rd of March, after weeks of organising, HEARglobe’s Engagement and Advocacy group celebrated their first World Hearing Day (WHD) event with the students and staff of the University of Melbourne. We were welcomed by an abundance of students curious to learn about their ear health, as well as University guests including the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS), Professor Mike McGuckin!
This year's theme was: “Ear and hearing care for all! Let’s make it a reality!”
