How much are we hurting our planet's oceans?
As humanity has built an increasingly globalized society, we have been able to gain many, countless benefits, of which a large number are only possible because of the resources held in the oceans and because of our ability to travel across it. These luxuries we take for granted include things like imported foods and goods and exposure to countless different cultures. But as with everything, there are many hidden (and not so hidden) costs. In this case, one of the greatest costs to our planet is the health of its oceans. As we have spread our influence across the world, we have taken more resources than can be naturally restored and destroyed natural systems that were previously in harmony. This is not all irreversible, but it will take a lot of coordinated effort from all of us if we want to see a change back in a positive direction.
When waste is improperly disposed of, it can make its way to the ocean where it causes serious harm to the wildlife.
The global demand for seafood has increased to the point that the ocean is struggling to maintain previously high populations.
The burning of fossil fuels from industries around the world has led to a gradual increase in average temperature and changing environmental conditions.
Think it's time for things to change?
