Healthy Eating Ways

What do you believe are healthy eating ways?

I want to share what I believe them to be and how I have used my own ideas obtained from my own research to improve my own health and still manage to eat great food that I like.

Why Eat the Right Food?

Eating a healthy diet is not a new concept for people who want to stay in a reasonably good state of health.

But it is a concept that is generally ignored by many people who just don't seem to realize that it even exists. People are getting overweight and unhealthy in growing numbers in an age where information is at everyone's fingertips and there should be no lack of understanding.

Yet the trend continues unabated. Why?

A big part of the reason why people are ignoring advice to eat healthily could be that they are not so much ignoring it, but are being hoodwinked into looking the other way, when that other way is in the direction of advertised processed foods that are labeled as healthy.

People think they are eating a healthy meal because it says so on the box it came out of. You have to eat right to feel right, is that not so?

Added to, Changed, Processed

But how can anything be healthy if it has gone through a process whereby a lot of unwholesome things have been added to it in order to make it last longer on the shelf, taste better, look better and have a better texture?

Those things that are added are generally:

  • Trans fats (hydrogenated vegetable oil being the prime offender) which improve the texture of the food

  • Monosodium glutamate (MSG) to improve the flavor of the food

  • Salt and often a sweetener such as modified corn starch or corn syrup to further improve the flavor

  • Preservatives to make it last longer on the store shelf

  • Antioxidizing agents to also help it store better

  • Stabilizers to keep the food, well, stable!

  • Artificial colors to make it look better

The list can go on and on. When you often see a collection of "E" numbers in among the list of ingredients that, to be honest, most people have no clue as to what they are or why they are there.

If you think that is healthy, you are sadly mistaken, my friend!

Fresh Produce

You have to eat the right food to be healthy and the right food is as nature intended it to be. Fresh vegetables, meats, poultry, fish, salad crops, fruit etc should be chosen fresh from the greengrocer section of the store, or bought from an organic store (even better) or farm store if there is one nearby.

Then you have to prepare and cook these items in your kitchen. That's the room you generally have the fridge, freezer and microwave in.

You should also have a regular cooker in there too someplace, probably buried under a pile of magazines with your car food stored in the oven (oh, so that's what that funny looking closet is…)

All joking aside, if you don't cook your own home cooked meals made from fresh produce (or better still, include some raw veggies in there) because you simply don't know how, it would be a really good idea if you learned how to cook. Your health and the health of your family will benefit enormously from eating real food.

You will all feel better for not putting so many toxins into your body from all the processed, packet foods you have been eating. Your health will improve because you will not only be eating really healthy food, it will provide you with more usable nutrients that will help boost your metabolism, rather than retard it as many of the above mentioned additives are prone to do.

Best of all, you will save money. That's because fresh produce you have to cook yourself is way cheaper than the packaged meals and frozen stuff.
