Past student have called this course "life" class and not just "health" class since it covers almost every aspect of your life. The entire purpose of this class is to spend time learning about YOU!
Although this course has a strong focus on Exercise and Nutrition, this course is much broader than just working out and having a healthy diet. We will focus on your mental and emotional health, social health, spiritual health, intellectual, cultural, financial, environmental, and occupational wellness. By the end of the course, you will be able to identify and determine preventative strategies for chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. By the end of the course you will also understand and apply the dimensions of wellness to your lives in order to increase your overall, lifelong wellness.
FREE TEXTBOOK: This course is a CALM course, meaning that this course is using an affordable textbook.
Access the FREE Course Textbook: Intro to Health OER Textbook
FREE READINGS: Throughout the course you will also be provided with additional free readings and materials online.
In this class, you will be participating in, and completing, several different types of assignments that are intended to help you actively learn the information in the course while also actively learning about yourself.
At the beginning of the course, you will spend the first few days simply learning about the course, learning about your classmates, and taking time to build a foundation for your health literacy. Health literacy refers to your ability to find, understand, and use information to make decisions about your health. With so much information available to us from so many sources, just trying to find information we trust can be hard.
Throughout the course, you will be reading chapters in the free health textbook, completing a quiz on what you read (this is open-book! I encourage you to take the quiz while reading), participating in a class discussions, work on improving your health with an 8-week behavior change project, and sharing what you have learned, which I like to call your "aha" moments.
I want to take a moment to expand a little more on the class discussions, since they are a big part of our course. The class discussions are the main opportunity in our class for you to share your thoughts, experiences, and learning with your classmates. Every post in our class discussion is an opportunity for you to learn, and for your classmates to learn from you. In the class discussions, you will be selecting a short video to watch (these are listed in the textbook) and then relating the video to what you learned in the chapter, what you have experienced in life, and what you have learned from additional sources of information. The additional sources of information might be websites, books, news articles, magazine articles, or academic journals.
At the end of the course, you will reflect on everything you learned and will use your creativity to create a Public Service Announcement intended to be something that you could share with your friends, family, or coworkers, that would help them learn what you found was most important in this course. This assignment is your opportunity to "pass on" your learning to others and thus helping to increase the health and wellness of our community.
As you start this course, you will have earned zero points and throughout this course with every assignment you complete, you earn points towards the grade you are hoping to receive. Each assignment completed takes you closer to earning that "A" grade!
I will make every effort to help you learn in this class and earn an "A".
I will always try to have your assignments graded within 72 hours of the due date so that you can continually know how close you are to the grade you hope to earn.
If you do not earn full credit on an assignment, you will have the opportunity to revise your assignment and re-submit for grading. I want you to take the feedback I give you, and learn from it by revising your work for a higher grade. I will allow for re-submissions of any assignment up until the course officially ends (No resubmissions are allowed after the course end date).
If you are not able to submit an assignment by the due date, I will allow you to submit it late, as long as you communicate with me to let me know you need an extension. I know that each of us have different life experiences and commitments that might bring a barrier to meeting due dates. I will allow you to submit an assignment late as long as you take the responsibility to let me know that you are not able to make the due date AND let me know when I can expect the assignment. For example, you might say "Dr. Falcone, due to personal reasons I am not able to complete my discussion post by tomorrow. I promise to have it completed by within 24 hours of the due date."
