Samuel Head was born in 1778 in Hooksett. He is most well known for his famous tavern, Head’s Tavern, which he bought in 1805 at age 27. Both Head and his wife, Sarah Sargent, entertained celebrities at their tavern. Additionally, Head’s Tavern served as a stopping place for horses to rest on their journey from Boston to Concord. Not only did he own a tavern, but he also dealt with lumber and was said to be one of the wealthiest men and most successful real estate owners in Merrimack County. Head passed away in 1854 at age 76 after a tragic death. He died after falling into a circular saw while reaching for a piece of equipment. Two doctors came from Manchester to try to save him. However, he passed away about two hours after his accident.
