The HC STEAMers assist the surrounding elementary schools in their bi-annual STEAM Nights. During STEAM Nights the HC STEAMers design their own 10 minute lesson to teach to their students about one or more of the elements of STEAM. To make sure the students are truly getting the most out of the activities they follow the Georgia Standards of Excellence; however, they teach the student in a more hands on setting than in a normal classroom. STEAM Nights are a great way to get involved in helping your community. If you would like to help at the next STEAM Night, make sure to visit out Get Involved page for more information.
During the Fall, the HC STEAMers focus their time on preparing elementary students for Fall STEAM Ahead. Fall STEAM Ahead is an elementary school competition where students compete in different competitions including wildlife, gardener, bee bots, costume design, and agriculture mechanics. The high school STEAMers work with surround elementary schools to make sure that their students are prepared and competition ready. The day of the competition, all of the elementary students competing in Fall STEAM Ahead meet at the Harris County Community Center to test their knowledge by participating in challenges and competitions. If you wish to get involved with Fall STEAM Ahead, visit the HC STEAMers sign up page and go see Mrs. Moss in G-13.
Jillian Munoz helped Mulberry Creek Students design and create a one of kind recycled mural. Each section of the mural correlates to each grade levels standards. The mural was also featured at the 2019 Southern Company Stock Holder Conference that was held at Callaway Gardens in Harris County Georgia.
Jillian Munoz is also heading a recycled chandelier that will hang form the library ceiling. The chandelier is composed of recycled water bottles the students have collected throughout the school year. The chandelier is inspired by Dale Chihuly who has art displayed in the Columbus Museum.
To promote kindness, Griffin Reddick and Jillian Munoz designed a bulletin board where students stand to be the missing "I". Students from around the school placed hand prints on the letters to pledge to be kind to others and themselves, and others hashtagged pictures of themselves with the caption #betheIinkind.
The HC STEAMers volunteered to design and build a Magic School Bus Parade Float. The day of the parade, the HC STEAMers dressed up as all the characters, and they sang the Magic School Bus theme song while passing out candy to parade watchers.
The HC STEAMers sold up cycled items to help pay for water bottle refill stations at the high school. They sold painted jean jackets, globe lamps, earrings, and much more!
The HC STEAMers hosted a school wide clean up at Harris County High School. Within two hours the students collected 36 pounds of litter!
