January 23rd- 27th is The Great Kindness Challenge
In addition to a week of creating a culture of kindness within our schools, all HCSD students participated in an HCSD District-Wide Service Learning #GrowKindness Project to address needs in the community. All week, each of our schools "grew kindness" towards members of our broader community disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, specifically the elderly, Veterans, and kids in need. Through hands-on projects, educational interviews, and classroom conversations, students learned about gratitude, building connections, and how a simple act of kindness can grow into something much bigger. Scroll to see how each school participated.
Our West Wildcats started with a school-wide gratitude activity where they shared things for which they are grateful and created a collage of kindness. This week also kicked off West's Service Learning project supporting families in need via Project Kids4Kids. Classrooms have been paired with 1-2 children from San Mateo County who do not have the same resources as we do. Students have been getting to know them, building connections, and celebrating differences. They will soon be spreading joy and kindness by creating care package boxes with items chosen specifically for their new friends based on what they've learned about them.
Our South Tigers put their creative skills towards creating kindness by writing, folding, and creating Origami notes that were delivered to seniors at a local assisted living retirement community, Magnolia of Millbrae. The students built empathy recognizing how some members of our community are experiencing loneliness and how a simple act of kindness can have a big impact.
North Service Learning Student Ambassadors kicked off the week by creating and sharing an educational video interview with one of our elder care partners. You can watch the video here: https://vimeo.com/790964284 Throughout the week, North Stars shined brightly as they created handmade flowers and notes that were delivered to seniors at The Abigail Senior Care Home. The students built empathy recognizing how some members of our community are experiencing loneliness and how a simple act of kindness can have a big impact.
During Grow Kindness Week Crocker students participated in activities during 1st period and lunch every day. Activities included creating survival bracelets for veterans, writing cards to the military for care packages, researching how COVID impacted the elderly, and so much more.
