Mobile Sensing and Behavior Modeling for Mental Health
Our CARE AI Lab at Stevens Institute of Technology is looking for "Android users" to participate in a study investigating the relationship between facial behaviors and cognitive function. The study aims to develop detection models that leverage passive sensing and real-world data to improve mental health. All activities will be conducted via Android smartphone in everyday settings, so participants will not need to be on-site to participate.
The Institutional Review Board at Stevens Institute of Technology (US) has approved this study (Protocol No. 2021-002 (N)).
Eligibility
Must possess an Android smartphone (Google, Samsung so on) with Android 9 or above.
Expectations and Requirements
The study will take place over approximately four weeks (up to $135). Participants will be allowed to drop out of the study at any point. Participants with high compliance may be invited to continue for up to an additional eight weeks.
Participants are required to join the interview to complete the following tasks including baseline surveys (approximately 1 hour).
- Participants will be asked to share mental health and cognitive functioning
- Participants will be asked to download our Android app during the interview. Instructions will be provided by our researchersDuring the study period, participants are required to enable our app and complete short daily surveys (three times a day) about their mental health and/or mood and cognitive games that measures attention, reaction time, and memory (approximately 5-10 minutes).
Specific Information
In order to protect the privacy of all participants, data transmitted by our Android app will be identified through the device id only, not by participant name.
Our app will take pictures of participants in order to extract data about their expressions and facial features ONLY. All images will be deleted after being processed.
Participants will need to enable the app. It only activates when the phone is unlocked or one of a number of pre-selected apps are entered.
Benefits and Compensation
Participation may help advance mental health research via better understanding of the relationships between facial behavior markers and mental health.
Participants will be compensated $20 for completing the baseline assessment, installing the required app, and participating in a brief preliminary interview.
Participants will be compensated $25 per week for completing all study procedures: Daily data collection, surveys, and cognitive assessment games. Only participants with >75% compliance per day and week will be compensated.
Participants with >90% compliance will be compensated $15 for a post-study interview.
