1. Human–AI Interaction
We investigate how people understand, trust, and act on AI judgments and recommendations. Our research examines how explanations, supporting evidence, confidence displays, and personalized interactions influence user perceptions and decision-making. We explore the relationships among trust, cognitive biases, and actual reliance on AI to design interfaces that help users understand AI’s capabilities and limitations and use it appropriately. Drawing on psychological and social science theories, we conduct user experiments to evaluate how interface designs affect judgments, experiences, and behavior and to develop principles for human-centered AI design.
2. Generative AI and Intelligent Agents
We investigate generative AI systems and intelligent agents that interact naturally with people and support their activities. Our work develops modeling approaches that account for user characteristics, conversational context, and task requirements, while exploring structures in which multiple agents take different roles and interact with one another. We apply these approaches to areas such as conversation, recommendation, learning, debate, and content creation to examine how they can support human activities. By evaluating model performance, the appropriateness of generated responses and content, and user experience, we design AI systems that address human needs.
3. User Behavior Analysis and Modeling
We analyze and model individual and group behavior using language and behavioral data collected from digital environments. Our research examines how user characteristics, information content, and interaction contexts relate to opinion expression and formation, responses to other users, and relationships within and between groups. By combining data analysis with language-model-based simulations, we explain behavioral patterns and explore plausible responses while assessing the capabilities and limitations of these models in representing human behavior. This work advances our understanding of online social phenomena and provides empirical evidence for designing digital services and interaction environments that respond to user needs.
