The Human-Centered AI Institute at Howard University is a national leader in shaping the future of artificial intelligence through ethics and social transformation. Situated at one of the world’s most influential historically Black research universities, our institute pioneers a distinctly powerful vision of AI one that is not only technologically advanced but fundamentally human-aware and community-informed.
We are building a new paradigm for AI leadership by developing groundbreaking research, training a new generation of AI scholars and innovators, and creating systems that prioritize fairness, accountability, and societal relevance. Our work spans responsible machine learning, health, education technology, and public interest technology, while actively redefining what it means for AI to serve society at scale.
As global conversations increasingly reckon with the social implications of AI, we stand at the forefront offering not just critique, but solutions. We are convening interdisciplinary scholars, community partners, and policy leaders to ensure AI systems reflect the full spectrum of human experience and aspiration.
The Human-Centered AI Institute at Howard University was established in August, 2022. Its first sponsor is the Office of Naval Research (ONR) through grant #N00014-22-1-2714.
