While still on october I made sketches for some fo the days that I did not finish. These where #1 Gargoyle, #11 Eagle, #15 Armadillo, #16 Fowl, #27 Snack, #28 Camping and #31 Farm. Some of then I liked enough to keep working on after the month has passed. In these cases, I decided to keep here pages with the work in progress.
This is the one for #1 Gargoyle.
#Inktober 2022, Day 1 - Gargoyle
I first tryed a few reference images, but thought they were too generic. Then I remembered a few alien-like ones. They were kind of cool but did not spark any idea.
After that I tried using some of these images with prompts to generate a few more ideas. My first attempts were to generate biomechanical parts. But the resulte were not very interesting. So this idea went nowhere.
Eventually I realized it would be interesting to go the other way: make a more human like figure. Something more like a cupid, or a satyr. I even went after some old concepts I had made in pen and paper many, many years ago. This icon on the right is of a concept for a graphic story I worked on a couple decades ago.
Then I generated a few images using the idea of gargoyle archer. It reminded me of some previous unsuccesful images i made for a completelly different prompt. So I selected parts of four images I had though i may use:
Using those I created a composite image (like I did for Heist) to use as a reference. I though legs were reversed, rigth arm was too high and I was missing the left one as well as one wing and the bow. Still, it gave a good general idea of the sillouette I wanted.
So I started creating my layers...
o I started creating my layers... First bow and main body separated. Kept the rigth arm out so I could better place it when the bow location was right. The base was just for reference and could be replaces later on.
Then I made the first base painting for the main figure and for the background. That is were it is right now. Still have many things to figure out in the details. For instace: should I go to the body distorted idea I got from my older drawings? How human like should it be? Unfortunatelly I run out of inspiration for this one. At least for now...
