Biology is a natural science discipline that studies living things.

The scope of biology, for instance, can range from genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology, which examines the molecules of life inside our cells and how they support human function, to cell biology, which is concerned with life's smallest unit. Additionally, there are disciplines like animal behavior, population biology, ecology, and systematics that examine groups and complete communities of creatures on even greater sizes. These disciplines include anatomy, physiology, and other disciplines that concentrate on whole organisms.

Other branches of biology, such as microbiology and virology, as well as botany, zoology, wildlife biology, and marine biology, concentrate on certain types of organisms, such as bacteria and other microorganisms, viruses, plants, and animals. Additionally, biologists frequently concentrate on both a certain size and an individual organism, such as plant cell biology.

Biology is also a foundation for other biology-based professions such as medicine, nursing and allied health, pharmacy and pharmacology, dentistry, and veterinary medicine.
