How might we redesign one area of our school so people, plants and animals can thrive in Australia's changing climate?
Welcome!
Imagine it is the year 2050. Australia is experiencing hotter days, heavier rainfall and longer dry periods. These changes are making it harder for people, plants and animals to stay healthy and safe. Some playgrounds become too hot to use, gardens struggle to grow, and local wildlife has fewer places to find food, water and shelter.
Our principal has a job for you! We need a team of Climate Design Consultants to investigate one area of our school and design a solution that will help our school become more climate-ready while supporting both people and nature. To launch the project, you will receive a special message outlining the school's concerns and requesting your help. You will then take part in a school climate walk, where you will explore the school to identify areas affected by heat, water, shade, and habitats for living things. As you record your observations and questions, you will begin thinking like scientists and designers. Working in teams, you will investigate, design, build, and test a prototype before presenting your final solution and design proposal.

Where does the Sun heat the school most?
Where could we improve shade or cooling?

areas that flood or stay dry
drains, gutters, and natural paths

How does water move through our school?
How could we manage better?

Look for:
plants, insects, birds and other living things
Look at what is growing
habitats and shelter
areas with little or no life
Think:
What living thing lives here?
What do they need to survive?
How can we help the environment grow?
