Katherine Photoshoot

It had been a long time since we had seen snow in Logan, Utah, and one day I woke up to a pretty decent snow storm. I immediately got the itch to do a photoshoot. I had this very specific idea where I wanted to go and take pictures of a girl wearing a bright red dress with bright red lipstick in the white snow. Fortunately my girlfriend had access to all of it and was willing to freeze for a little bit to go and take some pictures. The first picture is the original picture, the 2nd is after I made edits in Camera Raw, the 3rd image is making the background black and white, and the last image is a simple crop.

Photoshop Skills Used:

  • Camera Raw

  • Selection Tool

  • Mask Tool

  • Black and White Adjustment Tool

  • Crop Tool

Design:

  • Contrast - I tried to make the image as contrast as possible by having the bright red sit against the white of the snow in the background. I also added to it by completed making the image black and white in the background to give it that much more contrast.

  • Alignment - In the last image, I cropped it in a way where her head is in a third and I also positioned her in the middle of the photo between the hand rails to give it a little bit of the leading lines to the subject.

Revisions from Original:

The revisions I made, was, I adjusted the crop to try and have her dress be more evenly spaced on each side, so that she is aligned in the center of the image. I also decided to touch the picture up a little bit by throwing the image into Camera Raw and adjusting a few of the colors to make her stand out a little bit more. I also added a slight vignette, though it is difficult to see. Also, to avoid having the dark trees draw your attention away from the picture, I used the dodge tool to lighten up those colors and have my subject truly be the primary focus.
