With internet usage getting increasingly common, smartphones becoming more accessible, and social media usage becoming more regular, people can share information with one another faster than ever. One of the most common pieces of information shared through the different social media platforms is news. The news shared through social media can be published by news agencies, or by regular people through the act of citizen journalism.

With the abundance of social media and technology in our world today, the spread of information has become the fastest and most efficient it has ever been due to citizen journalists. Media users often opt to obtain news from them since their information is more consumable to the masses Because it is delivered faster and in a more understandable manner, the information that they put out often overshadow that of professional journalists these days. According to Bayuni (2022), the news and information being put out by bloggers, citizen journalists, and social media users are often even going viral. While we cannot deny that citizen journalists are vital in gathering news sources and evidence, I believe it is not guaranteed that the information they disseminate are factual and beneficial to our society.

In our day and age, where technology has advanced and progressed at an alarming rate, it has paved the way for various concepts to develop and evolve, including communication, media literacy, and public journalism. It is through public journalism, also known as citizen journalism, that the public is able to freely share information with society without possessing a diploma or a degree in journalism. However, the downside of citizen journalism information is that it causes misinformation and disinformation, as there is freedom of speech. Misinformation, according to UNESCO in 2021, is the sharing of false information under the pretense that it is true. On the other hand, according to UNESCO in 2021, disinformation is the deliberate spreading of false information, knowing that it is not factual.

Citizen journalists are individuals who report on news and events using digital media tools, such as social media platforms like facebook, instagram, twitter etc, and blogs, and online news websites. They may not have formal training in journalism, but use their own experiences and perspectives to report on events happening in their surroundings, communities or around the world. Their contributions can include writing articles, taking photos or videos, or providing live updates through social media. Citizen journalism can serve as an important supplement to traditional news sources and can provide diverse perspectives on current events. The citizens who are receiving fast information from these citizen journalists have a positive or beneficial effect in our society.
