A community can be described as a group of individuals that come together over something held in common. Before our service, we learned about how the communities we live in are comprised of individuals and systems that have their own strengths and weaknesses, and these affect the community's ability to address issues that they face.
Our week of service emphasized helping the Iowa City community and getting a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes services that support the various populations in the area.
We learned about leadership, examples of leaders within our community, and how to become better leaders throughout the week of service from
NAMI Johnson County - helping improve perceptions around mental health and increasing access to communal care.
United Action for Youth - helping young people who are experiencing troubles have a safe space to be welcomed to.
We were able to learn from these organizations as role models, following their examples of leadership to improve our methods of practice as leaders. We went forward with compassion and integrity in order to make the best future possible and make sure everyone feels welcomed.
Many of our activities required significant patience and empathy. Throughout the week, we heard a number of personal stories from community members which exposed us to new perspectives. One of the common themes we found while listening to these stories is related to the importance of people feeling heard and understood. Both NAMI and UAY emphasized the respect and compassion that all people deserve. We learned that young people often feel uncomfortable and confused in a healthcare setting, which is why it is important to do what we can to improve patient advocacy.
Strong teamwork skills are necessary for providing quality service. Over the course of the semester, we used our strengths as individuals to work through challenges as a team. Through team-bonding activities, we recognized the importance of trust and communication.
Throughout our time in Hawkeye Service Breaks, we saw firsthand how much we could achieve when we worked together. We were able to help dozens of community members, address issues, and discuss solutions related to health services in Iowa City.
