Community Building
"Practices aimed towards the creation of community through the advancement of individuals with common goals"
We volunteered and prepared meals at the Ronald McDonald Charity House in Iowa City, Iowa. This served as a community building experience as we were supporting our charity house community as well as the community of Iowa City.
We made tie blankets for children who are undergoing intensive medical treatment for the Ronald McDonald House. This served as a community building activity in addition to the meal prep by serving our community at the charity house and Iowa City.
At NAMI, we helped jumpstart a marketing campaign for their upcoming NAMI Walks event. By doing so, we built a community among our team and NAMI as well as strengthening NAMI's relationship with the Iowa City community as a whole.
Team Dynamics
"System of actions and psychological operations taking place within a social group"
We were assigned FEMA roles and had to prioritize certain populations in a town affected by a flood. We had to try and negotiate our beliefs with one another, try to narrow down which person or populations was most vulnerable, and determine where our budget would go towards to help said population.
Our goal was to make a square shape while we were all blindfolded. We tried to problem-solving such as trying out new strategies and alternating leader roles.
In the SPENT activity, we furthered our problem solving skills as a team. SPENT is an interactive game which prompts the user to handle their money well by introducing real life situations, such as medical bills, tuition, and rent. Through this activity, we learned how to come to a mutual consensus on where and what we wanted our limited money spent.
Cultural Consciousness
"Process of developing awareness of culture in the self, which can result in expanding understandings of culture and developing deeper cultural knowledge about other individuals and contexts"
As team members, we all had to come together and acknowledge how marginalized populations such as people of color, LGBTQ+, and people with low socioeconomic status' are the most vulnerable to health care disparities. A part of our task was to fill in the gaps and holes of our current health care system by being active citizens and networking with community leaders. By identifying these marginalized populations as well as understanding our own culture in addition to others' cultural needs, we are better well versed as health care workers and individuals.
