Meeting at 7.30 on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
Venue: Tamatea Community Church drop in centre. 1 York Avenue, Tamatea.

Right, I am going to have a bit of a shuffle on here. Directly below will be the most recent updates for our website. I will start this from January 2022. Then a little bit further on will be from January 2018 to December 2021 in that order. So if you want to see older stuff you will need to scroll through OR to get right to the end, hold down the Ctrl key and then press the End button and taadaaaaa you will go right to the bottom. I am hoping that this will make it easier for you all and will save you having to go to the end which can be time consuming.
Due to memory issues on the website, the last entry here is July 2022. After that, please pop over to the Tamatea 2022 page.
Our Federation hosted an afternoon tea to celebrate our four golden girls - Catherine Downs (1982), Betty McDonald (2001), Inez Rudd (2010) and Elaine Williams (2022). They have all been awarded their Gold Honours Badge, which is the highest award in Institute. Members were asked to wear something yellow or golden. Jenny Ziebe took photos, thanks Jenny.
Vice President June Fraser led our July 22022 meeting. She welcomed 23 members and our speaker. The Aspirations were recited by us all and then Marilyn led us in singing the Ode.
Our speaker for the evening was Emma Horgan-Heke from the Environment Centre. She was originally scheduled to speak in March but was unable to do so then, so it was great that she was able to step in at short notice. She was very interesting and I am sure that we all learnt quite a bit about recycling. It is not just about putting things in our kerb side bins. So much more can be recycled and saved from going to the landfill.
There were 12 apologies and 2 birthdays. We sung happy birthday to Frances Burton. The minutes were read along with the correspondence. and finance. We spoke about staying in contact with members especially if they are poorly. Many members have had Covid. Frances McLay had a fall and has broken her hip.

We had 9 apologies and 2 birthdays. The Aspirations were recited by us all.
Our delegate to the NZFWI 101st AGM in Wellington was Yvonne Hirst and she presented a comprehensive report. It was very interesting and she covered everything. It sounded like the ladies who went from our Federation had a most enjoyable time.
We then took a break to enjoy a dinner of soup and buns. The soups were made by members of the committee and they were German Potato Soup, Vegetable, Thai Pumpkin, Chicken and Vegetable and Smoked Fish Chowder. They were all delicious and welcomed on a cool evening.
There was a page of Christmas riddles to solve and a jar of lollies to guess how many were in it. The rest of the formal part of the meeting was concluded and then we finished up with a fun activity where each table had to dress one of them as Mother Christmas using a bag of decorations. A lot of laughter was heard while tinsel and toilet paper was being draped in a fashionable way.

Pam's dessert was a frozen icecream ball. Yummmmmm.
Our President, Annette welcomed 23 members, 1 guest and our speaker to our May meeting. We had 13 apologies and 5 birthdays. We sung Happy birthday to the 2 ladies who were at the meeting. We had a lengthy amount of correspondence to get through and quite a lot of general business so thank you ladies for your patience!
Pam Taylor and Brenda Spivey were thanked for their efforts with the Peggy Square blankets which they completed. Members had been knitting and donating Peggy Squares. The blankets are for Swinburn House in Pirimai. It is run by Birthright and is for ages 2-5. June Dalton has made 15 Trauma Teddies to be given to the police for young children. Inez is organising Jammies for June and is having a cutting out day on 17 May.

The Presidential candidates were discussed to help our delegate, Yvonne, be prepared when she attends the AGM at the end of the month.
Our speaker was Christine from Wool n Things in Onekawa. She was very knowledgeable about all things wool related. She had been happy to sit through our meeting and she had been observing the goings on. She noted that several ladies were knitting through the meeting...and she said that was a good thing. She had purchased a book recently called The Loving Stitch by Heather Nicholson. She had only read a few pages but found it fascinating and was able to relate things in the book to us e.g. a number of our ladies had been making Peggy Squares and Christine had been reading about them in the book. She was thanked by Varna and given a small gift of appreciation.

We were spoilt for choice with cold meats, salads and some delicious warm dishes too. Desserts included trifles, jelly, fruit salad, apple sponge and rhubarb crumble to name a few.

Due to Covid, secret friends were rolled over for 2021. These were revealed and so ladies found out who it was that had been leaving surprise gifts for them.

After a small amount of business, the meeting was closed and members enjoyed supper and fellowship.
30 members came along to the first meeting of 2018 which also included our 44th AGM. The usual formalities were dealt with quickly.
A discussion was had about extending the monthly Monday craft afternoon to include members of the public with the offer to teach a new skill. This might be showing a person how to knit, starting with a peggy square. Or it might be learning to make a greeting card and such like. There can also be special projects to learn. Jenny Ziebe is going to show ladies how to make a material Xmas tree in February.
The raffle were won by Deneice Marshall, Pam Taylor and Gaylene Bailey.
A small break was taken so we could stand up and have a stretch and then it was straight into the AGM.
*************************************
Treasurer, Pam Taylor presented the financial statement and distributed copies to members.
President, Annette Elkins presented her report. She very cleverly summed it up in one word - PRESIDENT. She said the best part had been taking the donations to the Napier Family Centre for our adopted family, and the worst part was trying to speak over members who were chattering.

Marilyn had a reply from Katie from Arlesey WI in Bedfordshire who sent a couple of photos. Katie said that "The weather has been very snowy with a very cold easterly wind, it seems to be thawing this morning as things are dripping. Our speaker was Lisa Hardie, who gave an informative talk on Birthright. It was started here in Hawke's Bay by Sir Peter Gifford to provide support for women parenting on their own. Help was given in the form of firewood, home maintenance etc.
The role for Birthright has changed with the times and now they also provide counselling, have social workers in 17 Hawke's Bay schools and also provide 2 early childhood centres for 0-2 years and 2-5 years. These children are also supported for their first 6 months at school.
Lisa talked about camps for children, positive parenting and funding.
The question was asked "How can we help?" Lisa said warm clothing for the children and toys would be appreciated. It must be remembered that these children often have very little.
We will be discussing this further for ways to help.

We then welcomed our special guest, Bev Doohan from Tamatea and Taradale Floral Art Clubs. who was demonstrating to us the art of making a shoulder spray.
Bev was very well prepared for the task and had 2 different types of sprays already made. One was fully wired and taped with Parafilm which can be quite stretchy and the second one was not wired except for the ivy leaf at the back and taped with Floratape which is stickier. Bev left some instructions and pictures of samples. Bev then proceeded to show us in detail how to prepare and assemble a spray. There is certainly a knack to doing the taping! It will be a challenge to us all to make a spray for the June floral competition.

Going along with the theme, members were asked to introduce themselves and state their 'favourite thing'. These varied and included food, people, crafty things, gardening, flowers, baking, sewing, quilting, grandchildren etc etc.

CHANGE TO OCTOBER PROGRAM. In addition to dressing up in Country and Western outfits and having C&W music playing in the background (feel free to sing-a-long), we felt it appropriate that in line with the National Awareness Week that we spend the evening making 'Lonely Bouquets'. These will have a message attached to them and will be distributed the next day.
Our speaker was Sharyn Phillips from CanInspire Charitable Trust. The Trust has been in Hawke's Bay since 2017 after starting in Ashburton in 2010 by a lady named Sarah Clifford who had been diagnosed with cancer. During her treatment she was given some beads, wire and the tools to create jewellery. This gave her a distraction from the treatment she was undertaking. She created 28 items, one per day and these were later auctioned by the Cancer Society and raised over $3000. The intention of the Trust is to give others affected by illness, trauma or loss the same help that Sarah was given. Unwanted jewellery is deconstructed by volunteers and then CanBead Kits consisting of beads, wire, tools and a mat are put together in bags which are currently being made by gentlemen at the Hawke's Bay Prison. To assist with funds, reusable bags with the CanInspire logo are being made for sale. Last March they held a Handbags and Gladrags auction which raised$9000. The Trust welcomes donations of redundant jewellery and fabric.

The main event for the evening was an Op Shop Fashion Parade. The models had a fun time selecting their outfits and they were all well received by a most appreciative audience. There was quite a bit of a surprise that these outfits were from an op shop. There were several categories - day-wear, evening wear and nightwear. At the end all of the models came out in the last outfit that they had been wearing to a rapturous round of applause.

23 ladies visited the Puketapu Pub for lunch. This is a very popular destination for lunch as there is plenty of room, is good for parking and has an extensive menu with varied pricing. My personal favourites are the fish burger and the beef schnitzel.
The ladies are tucking into their lunch. Makes me hungry just looking!!
The servings are very generous.
Our President, Annette welcomed us all and thanked our hostesses Pauline and Val. She also thanked members for donating goods for our Adopted Family. Can you guess what our theme was for the evening??? Country and Western although there was a bit of confusion and only a few dressed up.
We had one visitor, Maureen Paviour, who used to be a member so it was nice that she has reconnected. Our formal parts of the meeting were dealt with quickly.
Varna Day was our delegate at the Northern & HB Federation Half Yearly Meeting in September and she presented a report. Tamatea WI won the Smiley Trophy for most competition points and also the McHardy Vase for their Annual Report.
As we were right in the middle of WI Awareness week (8-14 October 2018), we had decided to make good use of the meeting by making 'Lonely Bouquets' to distribute the next day. So as soon as the meeting proper was completed, we moved to the supper room where tables laden with flowers, foliage and ribbons were waiting to be fashioned into beautiful bouquets. We all combined and helped each other make 73 bouquets.

Our highlight for November was our Flower Show and so it was wonderful to see so many of our ladies arriving with flowers to enter into it. It made for a very colourful supper room.
With the absence of our President, our Vice President, Joan took to the helm and welcomed the members to our November meeting. The Aspirations were recited and the Ode sung.
There was a reasonable quantity of formal and general business to be dealt with. We had a great response to the Lonely Bouquets that we had distributed in the community in October and brightened up the days of many people. Nomination forms for the committee were made available and it was pointed out that all of the top table would be going off committee next year, having served for four years.
The ladies that had not entered into the flower show were to be the judges, with each lady selecting their favourite in each category. Whilst this was happening, Joan hosted a song competition where the two sides of the room had turns in naming and singing the chorus of songs with a flower in the title. The place getters were then each presented with a certificate and a prize. Place getters were -

Our President, Annette, welcomed 38 members and 2 visitors to our Christmas meeting. Quite a few members wore Christmas clothes and.or decorations. She thanked our hostesses Joan, June and Lynn and also members for donating Christmas goodies for our Adopted Family.
There were 8 members celebrating birthdays during December and we sung Happy Birthday to them all.
The rest of the usual business was dealt with and then it was time for the Secret Friends gifts to be distributed...and there were a lot of them!!!
We then had Christmas Cracker Musical Entertainment. We were each given a Christmas Cracker. When they were popped, each one had a numbered whistle in. We assembled into groups of the same number whistle. Then Joan Coppell was our conductress and as she called out the numbers, we blew our whistles. Sometimes it was a little hard to figure out the tunes we were attempting to play but it was a lot of fun.
We then moved to the supper room to have desserts prepared by members of the committee and to have a good old chinwag. The 4 outgoing members of the committee - President Annette Elkins, Vice President Joan Coppell, Secretary Ann Webster and Treasurer Pam Taylor cut the Christmas cake.
The raffles were won by Peggy Flack, Joan Curtis and Varna Day.

Our President, Annette welcomed 33 ladies to the first meeting for 2019. Three ladies became new members which was great. A big welcome to Maureen Paviour, Lyn Lees and Margaret Beattie. We hope you enjoy being members of our progressive WI.
Peggy Flack was the only member celebrating a birthday in January so she had the Happy Birthday song all to herself.
The body of the meeting was dealt with reasonably quickly and then we were treated to an insight of Varna Days' life. Thank you Varna for sharing with us.
The raffles were won by Liz Nelson, Varna Day, Adrienne Parsons, Frances McLay, Marilyn Thorp and Elaine Evans. Most of the raffle prizes were gifts that we had received from our Links in the UK in the form of calendars and bags.
We then had a break and enjoyed a cool glass of fruit punch and a natter until we were called back in for our 45th AGM.
After a welcome and the apologies, the minutes from the 44th AGM were read and confirmed. Then the Secretary, Treasurer and President all presented their reports. They were each thanked for their time and the work put into them.

After a small amount of business, the meeting was closed and members enjoyed supper and fellowship.
Unfortunately I wasn't at the meeting so have used the minutes to compile this.
June Dalton welcomed 29 members and 2 visitors. As no President had been elected at January's AGM, she moved to have 2 joint Presidents. This was unanimously agreed and so our new Presidents are Inez and Liz Nelson. The rest of the business was dealt with and then it was on to the fun part.
February was our 45th birthday and this was celebrated with a pot luck dinner and a chocolate birthday cake. Members had been asked to dress in Art Deco and it was great that the majority had dressed up. Bev Cramond was chosen by our 2 visitors as the winner.

Our joint President, Liz, welcomed 43 members to the March 2019 meeting. The Aspirations were recited and the Ode sung. Liz read out a quite humorous poem which had men's names in and was related to getting older. Thanks Sarah for supplying the poem.
We all received our eagerly awaited programme for 2019. Congratulations to the committee for compiling an interesting and varied programme. It looks like a fun year ahead!!
Our speaker was Cheryl Evans from First Training who gave a talk on First Aid. It was good as it was targeted for older people and what situations we might encounter and how to deal with them e.g. finding a person unconscious, a person collapsing with a heart attack, choking etc. Cheryl had had 20 years with surf lifesaving in Piha and as first response with the ambulance service. She had lots of experience maintaining life until a patient was able to be transported to hospital or family arrived. She teaches advanced resuscitation to doctors and nurses as well. She explained DRS ABC -
D is to Check for DANGER
R is to Check for RESPONSIVENESS
S is to SHOUT for help - ask a bystander to dial 111 and ask for an ambulance
A is to Open AIRWAY
B is to Check for BREATHING - if not breathing, start CPR. Otherwise, if alone, leave the victim and dial 111.
C is for CPR 30:2 - 30 chest compressions, followed by opening the airway and giving 2 breaths.
(DRS ABC from NZ Resuscitation Council)
Cheryl stressed not to leave a person on their back as they could die. Pull them over into the recovery position however you can.
She then explained what to do if someone is choking. Things have changed and the Heimlich Manoeuvre is now NOT the recommended procedure. We also all stood up and were shown what to do if we are alone and we are choking. It was a worthwhile talk and so it was great that we had a good turnout. We all learnt a lot. Cheryl was thanked and given a small gift of appreciation.

Pam Taylor presented her 'Golden Thread'. She told us about her life - where she was born and grew up, her jobs, how she met her now husband, her family and what keeps her busy now. It was very interesting.

The outing for June was lunch at Shani's in Taradale. I have been to dinner there several times and it is always nice so it was a shame I could not go to the lunch. Anyway, it looks like everyone had a delicious lunch, very generous portions!!
President Liz Nelson welcomed 39 ladies to the July meeting which was our Mid Winter Christmas meeting. There were 12 apologies. The Aspirations were recited and the Ode sung. The meeting proper commenced and we heard from members who had attended events hosted by Wharerangi WI, Hastings Centre WI and Westshore/Port Ahuriri WI and it sounded like a great time was had by all at these.
Part way through the meeting we stopped to have soup and buns. The 6 soups were made by committee members and there were 2 chicken, 2 pumpkin, a vegetable and a beetroot one. They were delicious. A BIG THANK YOU to the committee!!!
Three members were celebrating birthdays in July and we sung Happy Birthday to them all.

The social outing this month is a Snowball Event. This is part of making our $10 snowball into a much bigger amount. It is a morning tea at the home of Varna Day on Thursday 25 July 2019 at 10am. The cost is $5.
There was discussion on the snowball money as it has been earmarked by NEC to go towards a life size statue of Miss Spencer so a lot of questions were asked. Inez reported that she will be involved in a conference phone call in August so will ask and come back to us with more information.
Inez Rudd is hosting a daffodil knitting day on Thursday 18 July 2019 from 9.30am onward. She will provide morning tea. If you want to make a day of it, bring a shared plate for lunch. The aim is to make 144 daffodils for 16 banners by the end of July.
There was concern that the sales table is not getting support so it was decided to not have these so often - maybe scale it down to 4 times a year and hopefully then members will bring along produce, baking and goodies for sale.
The September Friendship meeting will not be at night but instead at 2.30pm for a High Tea. A social gathering of fun and friendship. It is to be held at St Columba's and the cost is $10. Come dressed in your finery.
We welcomed two new members, Lenice Middleton and Robyn Single. We are sure they will enjoy being part of our WI.

A big thank you was conveyed to Varna Day for hosting the first "Snowball" morning tea at her home. Varna very generously supplied all of the food. Comments were that it was a very friendly event and Lois pointed out how it was nice to talk to other people as usually if you go to a cafe you only talk to the ones beside and opposite you. Inez, Annabel and Doreen also said lovely comments.
Inez reported on the conference call that she had had with the Centennial Committee. They have been working hard. The Snowball is a national event for all WI's for celebration events. They are hoping for grants and donations towards the statue.
Peggy attended the Meeanee lunch and had a lovely time with lots of laughs.

37 members and one visitor, Wendy Mason, were welcomed to the October meeting by co President Inez Rudd. There were 9 apologies. Special mention was made to think of Molly Wylie during reciting the Aspirations as she recently lost her beloved husband. The Ode was sung and it seemed to be sung with more volume and feeling this time. We also sung happy birthday to the 5 members celebrating birthdays in October. Committee decided to offer the choice of a hanky or a small pack of tissues with birthday cards.
Nadine from Dementia Hawke's Bay was our speaker for the evening and she presented in an easy format, a very interesting talk. Dementia is a collection of symptoms that cause a progressive decline in a person's ability to think, to remember and to reason. Mahana is the Napier site and they offer a Cognitive Brain Activity Programme that includes activities that both stimulate the brain and involve social interaction. At the end, Nadine was presented with a small gift of appreciation for taking the time to come and talk to us and also two boxes of biscuits for Mahana.
Marilyn spoke about the half yearly Federation meeting at the end of September and said it was fun, friendly and a lot of laughs. There were about 50 ladies in attendance. There will be no sales table but we will have a Box Auction with a Christmas Theme.

The October outing was lunch at The Filter Room in Meeanee on Thursday 31 October 2019. It looks as if a very nice lunch was enjoyed by the ladies. I haven't been there for a wee while but have heard good things about it.
Our co-President Liz Nelson welcomed 44 members and one visitor, Evelyn Gallagher to the November meeting. There were 8 apologies. After the Aspirations were recited and the Ode sung, we sung happy birthday to Lois Keenan.
After the rest of the usual business was dealt with, we learnt the results of the flower show. We ended the meeting with a Christmas themed Box Auction. Annette Elkins was a fine auctioneer who encouraged the bidding on over 25 lots.

At the completion of our meal, some tables were put away and chairs rearranged while the "Entertainment" went and got ready. Then out came a bunch of spectators and cheerleaders.

This day will be remembered as the day that NZ went into lockdown to try and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Four weeks is what we were told. Let's hope that will be all it is. Many small businesses will not survive any longer and some have been forced to close up permanently already. The tourism and hospitality areas have been particularly badly hit. Redundancies are happening in many industries including Air NZ, Airways, forestry, media to name but a few. Kiwisaver has taken a huge hit as much of that is invested in share markets which have been savaged. To date (7 April 2020) NZ has recorded one death, on the West Coast. There are over 1000 recorded cases. We have to all self isolate in a bubble. People aged over 70 and people with underlying health conditions and compromised immune systems are advised to avoid supermarkets so are having to rely on family and friends to get their supplies. We are nearly half way through the 4 weeks. We all have our fingers crossed.
Look after yourselves everybody. Look out for your neighbours. Be kind.
Karen Morton from one of our links in the UK, Burridge/Southampton sent these photos of textiles that she has obtained in her travels over the years. She has been busy mounting and framing them.

31 members braved a chilly and wet night to meet together for the first time since March 2020. Over lockdown we had frequent emails from Berry, our secretary which were well received. It was nice to be able to keep in touch and check on one another during that time. We were welcomed to the meeting by co-President Liz Nelson. There were 14 apologies. 11 members had birthdays during April-June with another 3 ladies in July. They were all presented with a small gift and happy birthday was sung.
The main business part of the meeting was attended to and then we dined on soups made by committee members and buns. The soups were Pea and Ham, Carrot and Ginger, Chicken and Vegetable and Vegetable. The ones I had were delicious!!
After dinner some important presentations were made -

25 Year to Frances McLay, Maureen Paviour and Molly Wylie.

Our speaker for the evening was Carol Charman. What an inspirational lady. She had received a QSM earlier this year for services to Intellectual Disabilities.
From the Hawkes Bay APP -
Rising above a lifetime of tragedy, and tirelessly putting others above herself has seen a Napier woman awarded a Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) for services to youth and people with intellectual disabilities.
The retired nuclear medicine technologist has been volunteering all her life but began assisting IHC (now IDEA Services), in the early 1980s. during which time she served as IHC Napier President (1991-93) and as a member of the national committee. But despite her years of sacrifice, Carol says she never expected, nor needed to receive any recognition.
“I was absolutely blown away and quite humbled,” Charman said. “You do these things because you want to and because you want to make a better life for everyone else. You don’t ever expect to get any recognition.
“Anything that I’ve achieved, I’ve had support all along the way. It’s never just one person, there’s always lots of backup and support for everything that I’ve done.”
Charman’s path into IHC began when her two daughters; Theresa and Vivienne were born with intellectual disabilities.
Back in the 1970s, she says there was not the support available like there is today. Her daughters lived with her until they went to Levin's Kimberley Centre when they were six and four-years-old.
She soon realised the controversial facility was "horrible" and spent many a day "crying" after visiting her daughters before IHC became operational and she moved them.
"They spent four years there and then I got rung up by IHC to see whether I would like them to be back in the community and I said that’s a silly question because I hated them down there."
Charman, who was living in Palmerston North at the time, says the difference was night and day. “IHC was and still is individually based. The staffing and everything was designed around the individual, so whatever Theresa or Vivienne required to make their life better and as normal as possible was put in place,” she said.
She was on the committee in Palmerston North for a long time before moving to Napier in 1990. She also played an active role in policy and service development on the national committee, including assisting people leaving Kimberly Hospital after it was deinstitutionalised in 1986. The centre was officially closed in 2006.
She was also a founding member of Parent to Parent New Zealand counselling and support service and volunteered at Awatapu special school.
But it was not until her second husband, a keen Rotarian, was killed that she became actively involved with Rotary Clubs. In 2004 she became the first woman President of Napier West Club.
From there, she went on to become the Assistant Governor for Napier from 2006 to 2009.
She organised the Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN) for young people from her region from 1998 to 2011. She was involved with the Napier Rotary Pathways fundraising project, which raised $6 million towards the creation of new pedestrian and cycle pathways. She is currently co-Treasurer of Greenmeadows Club.
Charman says she is most proud of her work auditing organisations supplying services and homes for the intellectually disabled, and RYPEN - both of which arose from difficult circumstances.
"I think both of those situations developed from a circumstance in my life that probably changed me. I mean I have no idea what I would be like, I don’t know what sort of person I would have been without those situations. I would have probably done volunteer work of some sort because I've always liked helping out but maybe it wouldn’t have been IHC," she said.
“I’ve had a very interesting life, a very challenging life at times, but you know that’s life isn’t it. Some people go through life with very little and others have their odd tragedy but it all makes us who we are”.
Carol was presented with a card and small token of appreciation by Pam Taylor.
It was decided that due to last year being pretty much a non event that the Secret Friends would be kept for another year.

Well, where do I start?? 80 ladies at 8 tables of 10 people attended the Northern and Hawke's Bay Federation Mid Winter Christmas Party. The cost was $15 per ticket as it was subsidized by Federation. It was held at Dunstall's Chapel in Napier. It came about from our late member Margarett Roche who had called for Marilyn Thorp to visit her when she was very poorly. Margarett was concerned about WI and wanted it to be fun. Michelle Dunstall (Margarett's daughter) was contacted and then all of the planning and work began. The Federation and Michelle got stuck in and produced what was an amazing event. I think it fair to say that it exceeded everyone's expectations. All I saw was smiles, laughter, lots of chatter and genuine enjoyment.
Christmas Tree at the entrance
Raffle prizes. I soooo wanted to win a raffle prize.
June Fraser was looking after name tickets and goody bags.
Annette Elkins and Molly Wylie were selling raffle tickets.
It was like walking into a Christmas wonderland. The entrance had a beautiful tree. We were all given a wee goody bag which had Thank You cards, tissues, Bubbles, a little toy and a Pen and Torch Set from Dunstall's.
Then we entered the chapel which had been transformed. Here are a selection of photos where I hope I managed to also capture the beautiful table centrepieces. Each table was named after one of Santa's reindeer. I was at Cupid's table.

Then the food started to arrive at our tables. WOW!!! We certainly weren't expecting such deliciousness.
We didn't know that we were all going to receive a present -

We sang Christmas carols - The First Noel, Hark The Herald Angels Sing and Jingle Bells. There was Rudolf's Christmas where a name was drawn out at each table and that lady had to do what was written on a drawn out card. It might be something like What was the craziest Christmas present you have received? Then that person also won a prize.
Then there were the raffle draws.
We were all sad for the afternoon to end.
Thank you everyone who worked so hard to make this event such a wonderful time.

Raffles were won by Gaylene Bailey, Michelle Dunstall and Val Hales. How lovely that our demonstrator was a lucky winner.
Then we were treated to a wonderful demonstration by Michelle Dunstall. She showed us how to decorate a Christmas Wreath. Instead of attaching decorations individually, different sized baubles were clumped together and she showed us how to make gorgeous big bows. The effects were stunning!! We were able to have a play with the ribbons afterwards. Michelle said she got inspiration by watching YouTube clips from Ramon at Home.
Some of Michelle's lovely ribbon.
Pam presented Michelle with a thank you gift which was a beautiful runner made by June Dalton.
Brenda Spivey had a go at making a bow.
Marilyn Thorp is enjoying making a bow. It is definitely easier when you use ribbon that has wire in it.
Well...after having to cancel the September Friendship meeting and the October gardening demo meeting because of that dastardly Covid19 lockdown, we were able to proceed with the November meeting. After a lot of discussion at the committee meeting, it was decided to change the night time meeting to a lunch outing. This meant the the flower show was cancelled for the second year in a row (last year it was cancelled due to the 9 November 2020 flood). So it was lunch at The Duke of Gloucester. We thought it was going to be difficult to hold a meeting where we had to observe the Level 2 restrictions which included masks on, scanning or signing in, and social distancing. One of the great things about WI is getting together and having a cuppa and a chat and this was not going to be possible at a typical meeting. We also could not proceed with the flower show as that meant too much wandering around. So lunch it was. Unfortunately I was not able to attend. Here is a selection of photos taken by Jenny Ziebe. Thanks Jenny.

Our President welcomed 37 members to our December Christmas meeting. We had a lovely 2 course dinner at the Napier RSA. We sung grace and the ladies who had missed their birthdays over the last few months were presented with a card and small gift.
I had beef schnitzel with mushroom sauce, chips and salad. Other options were Chicken Diane or Battered fish with chips and salad or Roast of the day with roast vegetables, carrots and peas.
Desserts were Chocolate mud cake, Hot apple pie or Ice cream sundae.
Secret Friends gifts were distributed.
Below, Nola Deverell was presented with her 20 year Service Badge by Inez. Congratulations Nola.
We had a Christmas Word Scramble where we had a list of 20 jumbled up words which when unscrambled, they had something to do with Christmas. It started off easy enough, but some were quite tricky and then very obvious when we were told the answers.
We finished off with Christmas cake. It was nice to be able to move around and chat with people and I think everyone had a most enjoyable evening.
