At the Haskell Greenhouse, we believe Indigenous Peoples should never have to pay for traditional medicines, which is why we established the Sacred Herb Initiative in 2022.
Traditional medicines are sustainably harvested at Haskell and within local ecosystems in Douglas County, Kansas. Student researchers then work to dry, bundle, and prepare species to be given away to the Indigenous community.
Since 2022, we have shared thousands of seeds, dozens of bundles, and various types of traditional species with the Indigenous community at no cost. Species include:
Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana)
Flat cedar (Thuja occidentalis)
Perique tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)
Muscogee tobacco (Nicotiana rustica)
White sage (Artemisia ludoviciana)
Sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata)
