Logo

Haru Yama is Spring Mountain in Japanese. It symbolizes a new beginning that is rooted in a strong base, the foundation which is the mountain.

Haru Yama's abbreviation H Y, also reminds the students of our late teacher Hironobu Yamada, from where the foundation of the techniques and philosophy comes.

The Oak tree pays tribute to my teacher Lonnie Oaks, who introduced and taught Shinkendo in Singapore in early 2000s and a great influence in my martial arts journey.

The leaves of the Oak tree represent the students who are growing from firm foundations and constantly look upon the mountain.

What Does Hironobu Yamada Sensei's Aikido look like?

Haru Yama Aikido

Welcome to the official Haru Yama Aikido Singapore Home Page. We are a community dedicated to preserving the practice of Aikikai style Aikido that has been handed to us by the late Hironobu Yamada Sensei (8 dan Aikikai, student of Hiroshi Tada Sensei and Menkyo Kyoshi Katori Shinto Ryu with Ritsuke Otake) in an environment that is safe and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of race, language, religion and gender.

Vision

To develop in both technical skill and positive spirit/attitude through the practice of Aikido handed to us by the late Hironobu Yamada Sensei not just for ourselves but also to help others along the way based on the illustrated knowledge structure.

Though highly skilled, the late Hironobu Yamada Sensei was humble as a teacher. We strive to replicate his humility in the practice and philosophy of not harming others and practicing in a safe and caring way.

Haru Yama strives to motivate, empower and inspire students and the next generation of instructors so that they take the time to pursue and develop their depth of skill in the art of Aikido as taught by the late Hironobu Yamada Sensei, constantly refining and improving themselves to become the best they can be not just for themselves but to help the next generation of students and people around them. This is so that the art will continue to flourish in a safe, positive and nurturing environment.

Knowledge Structure/Pedagogy

A firm Foundation (the triangle) gives the students the ability to structure and develop techniques with a strong base. Feet (Ashi), Body (Tai) and Hand (Te) Sabaki are crucial in any martial art, along with Breathing (kokyu) exercises, which unify the mind, body and spirit.

Technical skill (the circle) encompasses in its core the unarmed techniques and applications (Oyo waza), together with the extension of these techniques into the short, medium and long range wooden weapons, the Tanto, Bokken (wooden sword) and Jo (wooden staff).

It is not enough just to focus on personal growth in Aikido but to also nurture a future generation of practitioners that have a meaningful connection to others and all living things (the square) regardless of gender, race or religion.
