Growing up in my home, I was exposed to lots of music. I remember often playing my mom's old records on an old record player and being awestruck by the musical production of artists like Jimmy Webb, Stevie Wonder, Bones Howe and vocal talents of artists like Sam Cooke, The 5th dimension, and the Drifters. By the time I was in Kindergarten or 1st grade, I wrote my first song called "Talia My Love" about a little black girl I was only fond of because I did not know what love was at that point in my life. Being a child, I supposed I knew better. Nevertheless, since then I have written many ballads, songs, and poems. My poetry often evolves into songs. Below is a kid's poem I wrote recently. I am planning to release an album of songs/poetry for kids inspired by musician and educator Ella Jenkins, as well as a book of poetry and art.
“The Rain Rime”
Every time the rain falls down I do believe it soaks my mind
Every time the rain falls down I do believe it soaks my mind
I begin to lose my train of thought
it's only then I realize
What goes up
Must come down
And vise-versa if you stick around
Every time the rain falls down I do believe
I quite perceive
I don’t deceive
When I conceive it soaks my mind
Every time the rain falls down it wets my feet and soaks my socks ( as I kick rocks)
Every time the rain falls down it wets my feet and soaks my socks ( as I kick rocks)
Then I make a dash before a splash of water fills my old galoshes
While I’m off to school
To learn the rule
To grow up so I won’t be fooled
Every time the rain falls down I make believe
My name is Yves
Sailing on a ship of steam
With my dog name Jeeves
Eating beans
As I daydream it soaks my mind
